when you say GARTRAC rst do you mean rs turbo??
cos the only GARTRAC road cars i ever saw had 2.0 pintos or
v6's usually out of a capri or xr4i,or a cossie yb
some even had the original donkey pulled out and a yb put
in as the v6's could be troublesome...
they were sometimes referred to as a GARTRAC G3 or G4x4
saw quite a few on q plates but many were like that

Basicly gartrac back in the day did all the major works and strengthening on Mk 1 and 2 escorts ,
When the mk 3 came arounfd , and being FWD they converted them to run rear wheel dribe , engines varied from 1.6 pinto to V6 Cologne,
they diod a lot of rally cross cars ( called the G3 ) and kicked ass all the way upto the mid ninties,
they also did a road going version for sale to the public called the G3 , this had a V6 in it ,
i have seen Genuine gartrac coverted Mk 3 and Mk 4's , including 2 cabbys , both Mk 4
a lot of people who have a rear wheel drive Mk 3 or 4 , will call it a gartrac, but home done jobs , ( no matter how well done ) and the Genisis cars that are around ( i have one ) will never be a gartrac ,
Ł35k build for a gartrac shell , inc cage ad pedle box ,
They are seriously special cars , and dont suite the pocket of your average ford/chav/time wasting owner ( not i said owner and not enthusiast )
regards , lee

if you look under the bonnet and back end of the gartracs, genuines from what i have seen use either mk1 or mk2 suspension points
i.e front inner wings and a complete leaf spring rear set up
most home built ones use the complete floor pan and engine bay off a sierra to do it
i phoned gartrac a few ago when i was looking into it and they will still do a shell, but looking at the 6k mark but that was with the kevlar wide arch kit aswell

The Reynolds brothers (Enfield) purchased the first Gartrac RWD Escort shell built ready to accept ALL Sierra (Cossie) running gear - that car was a Cabrio fitted with the extra wide rallycross wings..........it was 500 BHP Cossie powered too.

i remember the rs500 cabriolet Doug and yours too,
now i know why your face reminds me, i remember the silver one
and when the rs 500 cab got nicked and recovered it made a reapearance
with a normal cosworth yb, still looked good though.
what happened to the azure blue one if you don't mind me asking

I had TWO Azure Blue Gartrac G6.............One was RWD with a standard 2.8 cologne V6.....this had the single leaf sprung rear end, and at the same time I also had the 4x4 one pictured above...........Both were painted by John Welch in Fleet (he was a friend of Martin's in your avatar ).
Around the Guildford/Hampton/Kingston area (Surrey), there we're quite a few G6 Gartrac's.........Also Roland Dane at the XR centre in Byfleet used to buy the converted shells from Gartrac and Dennis Tyler (mechanic) would build them into completed cars to the customers spec

Think Cosworth..........then think "Gartrac" and the names of the son and the daughter of the companys two co-founders

his car was a sister car to MR Rallycross.

D'oh! Beaten to it.
A couple of ex-gartrac employees also set up in Hertford and were knocking out various Mk4s a few years ago.
Daves son is doing a lot with the business (Gartrac) now, and they're still turning out top, top spec work
Ben
