The new breed are all different these days.
You watch the Grp N Irish rally boys and the like on Men and Motors there nearly up to the same speed as the WRC cars on some stages.

The Impreza N10 comes with an optional five-speed, close-ratio 'dog' engagement gearbox to optimise the performance from the engine. We use spur gears with reduced clearances, improved tolerances and six dogs to improve the durability.
The N10 has a new transmission controller linked to a programmable electro-mechanical centre differential that can be mapped for various conditions to improve handling and traction.

Any ideas how long a Grp N would last though, I have seen a LHD Escort fairly cheap has ALS etc, and I am getting fed up with my saff as it keeps breaking

Its impossible to say, why should the Grp N be any better or worse than your saff??
as with most motorsport prepped cars they usually need more looking after and replacement of parts.

I would think that a motorsport car would be built to take more abuse, so would handle it better, there is no compromise for town driving etc. I understand that some parts are designed to be changed on a more regular basis, but would have thought that Grp N is aimed at competitors that dont have the money to buy a new turbo after every couple of events, hence asking if anyone had any experience/knowlege about running a car like this.

Grp N cars are prepped exactly the same as Grp A all parts are lifed and most are stripped on a regular basis.
If you want long service intervals and not have to do regular work buy a std car.
THATS LIFE there has to be a trade somewhere.

to be honoust the "group N" category is a complete joke , the 'old' group n was supposed to be as peokie says 'showroom' class cars , the idea was to keep the car 'almost' std you even had to carry the interior trims , even the bits that you cut off to fit the roll cage had to be carried
now i see the impreza with a fookin dog box for fooks sake , hardly a road car is it

Agree with you there Mark.
"Old" Group N used to be like a road rally car is nowadays.
I think the only thing Group N has to adhere now is that it has standard suspension pick up points

It depends on how much you want to use it as a road car mate.
We did a couple of journeys in my brother's 205 rally car to Northampton from North London - that's about 70 miles, and it was horrendous!
The noise, and the petrol fumes really do get on your tits, and there is no such thing as comfort.

Group N rules have changed now Mark - go read your Blue book
As said above - Motorsport cars have parts that are lifed these days. Unless you know the owner, or the cars pedigree / history or have a large bank balance its a risky business.
Impossible to say how long its going to last - it depends on what you are going to do with it, If you drive it like my dad would it would last you forever, however if you were to try and be the next WRC champion with it I would give it about 3 miles.
Your right in thinking a Gp N car is run at the cheaper end of the big banger sport - and so the parts on it may probably not be upto much.
So the choice is drive it slow everywhere - or throw lots of cash at it once you have it by putting bit after bit after bit on it. Only once you have changed everything will you have a reliable car IMHO
Rich - if you use the correct hose it won't smell at all - hense comments like those above, some Gp N cars are built on the cheap to a budget, but then again some are built correct. If you know what your looking for its easy to tell - if you have no idea then you can get your arm ripped off quite easily.
