Should soldiers pay tax?

As far as i'm aware, if you are more than 9 miles off the coast, you are classed as out of the country - hence why it's reclaimed so much
My question is why should he have to pay tax if he's sent out of the country and therefore unable to use the services his tax is paying for?
I work and pay tax, as do the rest of my family - and we are fortunately all healthy and not a drain on any service - so we pay in and take very little out
To my mind, when my dad doesn't pay tax when he hasn't been here to use any services, it's less in the pot for the ones who commit benefit fraud or can't be arsed to get a job
I am glad i rarely do tax work, as it annoys me. This country takes more than enough from people who've worked hard all their lives and made something of themselves as it is - inheritance tax is very unfair at the moment in my opinion.. Taxing people away from their homes and families serving this country - a complete joke

However, if you were getting shot at in a forgeign country as part of your normal job would you expect any extra danger money?
Or to pay for services back in the UK that you did not have any access or benefit from ?
Not to mention what happens afterwards to families and income if these people are killed in the line of duty.
Remember the term "soldiers" does not just include army front-line, this is ALL services in all trades and all ranks. People like admin and techies who I'm pretty sure felt fairly safe knowing they are normally a few 1000miles from the front-line, now getting selected to be drivers and escorts as well as their primary trade aspects right up there at the sharp-end.
And I state again: IF things got really bad in the UK, I guarantee people who are now moaning would be at the front of the queue asking why our armed forces are not protecting the UK from the bad guys.
You winge about the govt giving something back to the forces personnel so they can have some good degree of living standards for their contribution to OUR country yet would want their help as soon as iyou felt unsafe.

Flip side is in the states EVERYBODY is really proud of their servicemen and dont question any such breaks they get, I'm sure if this was on a yank forum there would already be people giving out some serious abuse to those moaning.

I really cant believe some people on here, some of you should really be ashamed of yourselves with whats been posted on here.
I really cant think of a job that compares to a soldiers job. How many others put their lives on the line in their job? Yes there are many jobs where people help others, but how many help others whilst risking their own life, the most important thing in the world.
Whether they should pay tax or not is not the issue in my opinion. What i do know is that they should get more take home pay, whether this be through a decent pay rise or to be tax-free.
Just think where we would be today without these people putting their lives on the line.

Then when shes back in the UK does she go and help flood victims, cover for any other service that goes on strike ( ambulance and fire service, both in recent times).
Does she get posted anywhere in the UK, germany, cypruss etc, hundreds of miles away from her family and friends? Does she live in a married quarter/ single accomodation that are in far WORSE conditions than most prisoners live in?
I could go on, yes there are lots of bonuses to being in the forces, but over time a lot of them have been eroded, and now so many people are so pissed off with crap wages and conditions that they are leaving in droves.....
Nurses do a fantastic job, but to even compare it to the forces is funny , how would you feel about your wife running through an enemy ambush to try and save a few lads who have been shot in Kandahar/ Iraq, trying to keep them alive long enough to get them to a field hospital, but even though she is wearing a red cross they are still shooting at her, trying to kill her??? I bet you wouldn't feel quite so happy then

When on active service in another country they should not pay tax.
when back in this country they should pay tax.
they should get a pay rise as i can earn more than they do part time as a lifeguard!
to compensate for the cash "loss"
easy. how many people who are on the dole could hold down a job?
but choose not to through sheer laziness. people with a physical imparement that means they cannot work is fine,
they scum who milk the benefits system should have the cash cut by 50% after 3 months, then 50% again each month thereafter.
see unemployment drop like a lead ballon if that was put in practice when they all see they can only get about £10 a week or even less

Ahh, but that makes the budget look big, just give tax back instead and it looks like we are doing them a favour, and only when on ops....
Fucked up really

Tax
Well just read this with varied views. I serve with a Commando Unit and have completed various tours.
Have been away from my family formonths on end, watch close friends killed by insurgents hell bent on killing us at the first given chance.
We join the forces at out own free will and its our call, but look at the overall situation, in afgan and iraq, these battles have raged for more years than I care to remember.
The reason we are there is because our Goverment orders us.
The Service Guys and Girls that are on this site will tell you whats its like, my last tour even when we were kipping your have bullets flying over you motars going off and so much more shit going on.
Then you have to see some pretty bloody sites, like kids blown to bits, and so much more stuff that really fucks you up, but you have to deal with it and push on.
So as for all the people that think we dont deserve it, spend a day in the conditions we endure out there and see what your feelings are after.
I am the first to agree when we are home, we should pay our taxes like any other person and abide by this.
People mention our emergency services, they provide a job to the likes of us all, but as people say, they choose to do this line of work so it setting double standards and we could say the same for them.
The job they do day in day out is second to none, and one could say that no money is worth some of the jobs they do, like dealing with a rta on a road where young children have been killed.
You have to be a secial kind of person to do the jobs we do and have to accept we dont want to be posted, i would far rather be at home watching my daughter grow up, take her first steps and enjoy being around my family and friends, instead of fearing for my life and that of my unit, when i have crazy fools strapped with bombs waiting to blow them up and you as you drive past.
So to those that get all jumped up Balls to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they should pay tax, i know it a shitty and dangerous profession, but as already stated above it's a chosen one. A decicion that should be taken VERY seriously when signing up, especially the possibility of ending up in a war zone at some point in your career seems to be guaranteed lately!
I'm sorry if you do not agree, but this is a public forum and disucssion so that's what it's all about i guess.

Plus!
Let's not forget:
Assuming you’re working abroad but herald originally from the UK, if you spend more than 183 days in the UK in any one particular tax year then the UK consider you ‘theirs’ for all taxation purposes!
So it's kind of what people are entitled to anyhow no matter what job they do. I think the govt are using it as a way of making themselves look better by "giving something back".

I have just read through this topic and cant believe some peoples attitudes? I have been old bill for nearly 16 years and spent all of this on the street in a busy seaside town with all the crap that nearby london sends our way. I also work with a lot of guys (and girls) who have served in the armed forces previously.
I certainly wouldn't group Fire, Police etc in this arguement, we do a job that can be dangerous but it is nothing like serving abroad, some of you keyboard warriors should think about what you type before pressing the submit button........I see you as the sort of people that shout "C*nt" when I walk or drive past but when I come over to speak to you, are too scared to admit it....spineless.......
Oh and £3700 for a broken nose?....I think someone is telling porkies there or there is a lot more to the story!!!

No, you said you should pay tax no matter what.
I said why should you pay tax when you are not able to use those services. If you are incapable of using something, why should you have to pay for it ??
Agree you should pay when you are back in the UK, but not when you aren't.

Theres some services that other people will never use in their life. There are people that go through life and never have an operation, but then some people may have several costing hundred of thousands of pounds....off the state. Its how it goes. You earn, you get taxed, its how it works.

Hmm..cross wires on that one.
I meant for Council Tax purposes on that one.
That pays your part toward poilce, fire, bin emptying, etc.
As much as these are needed, when you are detached abroad the house becomes a single-person entity - therefore single-person council tax should be paid.
As for Income Tax, your points are valid apart from the fact that EVERYONE who works abroad for 6 months or more is ENTITLED to non-tax payments to the UK govt.
Meaning if you worked away for 6 months, you would be entitle to it.
Would you claim for taxes back when the time came? Course you would. you, me and everyone else: as that is what you would be entitled to. Same thing reference the forces. Doesn't matter what you use now, in the past or in the future. It is an allowance you are legally allowed to be re-imbursed on.
Why take that away from 1 sector of workers ??
