Default a scam?

just had a phone call from "sky" and the girl on the other end said that my warranty had run out and would i like to keepit going etc etc
everything including my remote would be covered by the warranty (£5 a month of £50 for the year one off payment)

so after a bit of uming and ering, i said yes go ahead with the fiver a month on top of the normal sky price

this is where the scam part comes in (i think)

because they were a "different department" i would have to give them my sort code and account number over the phone but everyone i have ever spoken to have never asked me this sort of thing before

so i put it to her direct "are you trying to scam me? i never ever give oot my details over the phone no matter who it is, they always tell you to either call back via the head office" etc etc

then the line went a bit dead and i could hear someone in the background mumbling away

then her mate got on the phone and said she'd be back in a moment and then the line went all "far away" as if someone had put their hand over the mic and i cold hear someone saying "hello? hello?" but this was a bloke, and then i heard "ffs!!!!" and the line went dead

they called back a few seconds later and said sorry the line had gone dead but would i like to give them the details and they could sort it out as a "special offer price" rather than the full whack (which she didn't tell me when i asked)

then i told her my account had been stopped because my bank details had been compromised and i wouldn't have been able to use that account anyway and she gave me a number and her name to ask for when i had had a think about it

this has SCAM written all over it, but i can't help but feeling that i've missed out on a bit of a deal

have i done the right thing (i think so yes) or have i been a twat?

if your sky stuff goes wrong just buy some more on ebay, only electrical goods warantee ever worth having is one from richer sounds. Sky is enough of a rip off without paying extra, anyway you did the right thing.

warantees aren't worth the paper they're written on in almost every case. Extended warantees are the biggest scam going this side of speed cameras

some info from the net,

Then one week later I get a call from Satellite Direct. This time the call is from 0870 240 2473. Apparently, the warranty on my Sky has expired, and to avoid all kinds of awful callout charges, I should buy a new warranty from Satellite Direct. I know this not to be true.

As the story says here, Satellite Direct of Yapton,West Sussex, is the second largest warranty repair company of Sky Digital systems in the UK. A bit worrrying then, that they should be using such unethical techniques for selling unwanted warranty products.

I spoke to Data Partnership Solutions shortly after, and they admitted that DPS and Satellite Direct are sister companies, based in the same building in Yapton. The woman at DPS described her company as a "lifestyle survey company" and "working for some of the biggest companies in the UK". She was very keen to maintain the chinese wall between the two companies, but it's clear that in this case the DPS 'survey' is purely a tool for generating leads for Satellite Direct, upstairs.

They agreed to take my telephone number off their database, so I don't expect any more calls. This is a great example, I think, of how the new speech technologies make it much cheaper for companies to try the same old scams.
