Default would you have a mini?

Would you own an old mini? I have always wanted one since i was really young but then as i got to driving age there were bigger cars like escorts n stuff so minis never interested me. But i been looking at some lately and wondering, just for a short period, if it would be fun to own one

Any views on this bizzare idea?

My mum had loads Lee..loved them..then had me and found they weren't as practical as she'd tried to convince herself..

I want one..think of all the small parking places you wouldn't have to say ''why's that twat parked over 2 bays'' and instead just pull in..

I cant fault it for the fun factor

Its ok, But bearing in mind its a 1978 plate car.. So 28 years old LOL

Handles very well, its only got 1.5 neg arms, and the yoko a032's on and polybushed front end

For a 998cc,I love it

I dont have the best seats in but ive not moaned, Had them 2 years now

But i will be upgrading very soon, As i will be doing more to the suspension, So i dont wanna slide about

Pennywise,

I had to change a radiator on an original version car, and subframe
rust on my mothers car put me off for life.

Hate the new version cars as they are just germanys attempt at
cashing in on a british design icon IMO.

I can see why others like them but just not for me.

The new MINI was actually designed in Britain by Rover as a replacement for the mini/metro - BMW decided to keep it for themselves when they ditched Rover.

Old minis are great great fun on a nice day. Ive had a couple now.

I had a 1985 mayfair as a first car, loved it in the summer but winter was an absolute misery. Crap heater, pointless wipers, cut out in heavy rain and absolutely impossible to keep the windscreen from fogging up ALL THE TIME!
I sold it in january and bought a brown boring cavalier just because it had a decent heater.

The second one was a 1968 mk.2 with the fluid suspension, that was an absolute riot to drive - simply laugh out loud funny!

But you cant buy cheap ones anymore. The values have shot up recently. Around here the yank servicemen buy them all for a fortune and ship them back to the states.

Oh and boy do they rust?! My '68 needed door skins, sills, 1 floor pan, inner and outer A panels and hinge reinforcers, wings, front panel, inner rear arches and rear valance.

And that had 9 months MOT when I bought it!

So if you want a car for sunny days that handles like a go kart, feels fast (even though it isnt) and will hold its money - go for it.

Just buy yourself a welder and a haynes manual!

I'd love a completely standard looking 1000cc mini mayfair with a civic type R lump in the boot. Z cars do a busa conversion too.

I spun my Mini on a muddy bend hit the kerb and flipped it into a railway bridge squashing the roof flat Dislocated my hip, compression fractures to my spine and a broken neck for my troubles. After a month in hospital and 2 months on crutches I was back at work. They are bloody good fun though

The poxy little hose that goes between the water pump and the head is a bitch to change

To be honest I just havent got the legs to get away with one mate. I need at least a knee length one so myhairy bollocks dont hang out of one side.

On a brighter note though, they can be quite airy and give a feeling of freedom when its a breezy day.

I had one for my first car, my sister owns it now and I used to be on the commity of my local mini club.

They are like nothing else to drive, mainly due to the direct steering and size, around town they are loads of fun but they tend to loose appeal out on the open road.

I often think about how I would love one to go to work in but they are old cars and tend to be quite neglected.
