Default MK6 escort steering 'creak'?

I have an annoying creaking sound when i turn my wheel. Its not rubbing on the steering shroud so i'm pretty stumped as to what it could be? I've replaced the suspension top bearings and that has made no difference. Are there any bushes in the steering column that could cause this?

have a look at the front springs, the very top coil where it's been flattened upto the next one down, often they go rusty here which can cause a creaking sound. while it's in the air [as you'll only see it it with the weight off it] fill the gap with grease then try it.

its the droplinks. my ka been doing for a few months only sub 20mph i thought it was the suspension due to it being lowered quite a lot on coilovers but when i jack it up and take the drop links off it was silent, only Ł10 each cheaper than the stearing rack!

Putting new droplinks in this week, i'll also try lubbing up the steering column rubber and the suspension top rubbers.
