but they started about 4 or 5 days afterwards, when it was clear that he had died and it wasn't just a roumor

i'm sure more people are thinking along the lines of "is this the end of top gear?" than "i wonder who will replace him?"

Hammond out of Intensive care, making good progress. On to a high dependancy ward. Has a shiner tho

Hammond's brother, speaking to reporters on Thursday, was also positive about the father of two. He said: "He's making a bit of good progress. Both his brothers are here and his wife. The doctors are very pleased."

Well he was just on Sky news.... he was at the Hospital with something. Could not see what was going on.

I got back from my holiday in Greece, small island of KOS this morning, and this story made front page even over there Thursday AM , some locals heard of it and it was the UK equivelent to OZ V8 driver Brock`s death. Tragic, I couldnt believe it Glad he is coming together now and hope he doesnt take a turn.

Thought it funny Clarkson joked about Hamsters crap driving
But who thinks thats worse than pete mcCrash comment? both bad taste ? I thought it a giggle as did Richard by the sounds of it

All the best Richard, looks like I might not get his job now then after all. You know Top gear will joke about it in the next series, roll on Jeremy racing hamsters in exercise balls that look like drag racing cars

Gotta say that Pete's timing is slightly wrong but he's a good bloke. He's a mate of mine and his sense of humour is a bit warped sometimes but allways makes me chuckle. He watches Top Gear just like the rest of us and knows once Hammond is back, they'll be taking the mick out of him IMO.

Give Pete a break, he's just a loon

Get well Soon Hamster!!! Gotta see you sink another Hilux in a lake or burn a caravan down, lol

this aint a piss take but......do you think the odds on him surviving was better cause he was a short arse? as in he is well in side the jet car, strapped well down and in it, etc? like i say not a piss take but if Clarkson was in it do you think it would be the same outcome?

Possibly. Is there a maximum height spec on the Vampire?? The cage must be a set certain height, so perhaps that's why James (then Richard) were set to do the drive instead of giant Jeremy?
The cage will have been above Richard's head height anyway & it was only the fact the cage dug into the soft ground that was the reason his head was incontact with the ground. If it had been done somewhere which has barriers all along the side of the strip then if the car had rolled on concrete, the cage would'nt have let his head touch the floor.

Quoted from BBC news website just now:

The wife of injured Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond says she has been overwhelmed by the public support since her husband's high-speed car crash.
Amanda "Mindy" Hammond said she has had messages from around the world since his accident in a jet-powered car, during filming near York, on Wednesday.
The 36-year-old presenter's condition is said by doctors to be "stable".

"He's starting to look like Richard again. He's tough as hell and on his way back," Mrs Hammond told the Mirror.

Father-of-two Mr Hammond suffered a "significant brain injury" when he crashed. The accident is being investigated by the BBC, the police and the Health and Safety Executive.
Mrs Hammond told the Mirror: "He's spoken and smiled. It's early days and what has happened hasn't really sunk in for him.

"The whole family is overwhelmed by everyone's support. There have been so many flowers, cards and e-mails from around the world.
"To know that so many people love him is astounding. We want to thank everyone for their good wishes and prayers."

Jeremy Clarkson, one of Mr Hammond's co-presenters on the BBC show, told the Sun newspaper his colleague had got to his feet and walked "shakily" to the toilet during the early hours of Friday.

And fellow Top Gear presenter James May said on Friday he believed the injured presenter was "perfectly intact" after the pair had had a conversation at his hospital bedside.

"I'm not a doctor but I am his mate and I believe that deep inside the Hammond I know is perfectly intact," he said.

Mr Hammond, who lives near Cheltenham, Glos, is out of intensive care at Leeds General Infirmary and said to be making "satisfactory progress".
Doctors have previously said they are "reasonably optimistic" he will make a good recovery.

Walked to the toilet & had a conversation with James. Good signs imo so far.

Daily Express:

Top Gear star Richard Hammond got to his feet and walked, just 30 hours after his high-speed crash, his co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson has said.

The 36-year-old is in a stable condition at Leeds General Infirmary where friends and family have been keeping a bedside vigil following Wednesday's accident at Elvington airfield, near York.

Clarkson, a Sun columnist and Hammond's co-presenter of the motoring show, said in the newspaper: "In the wee small hours of Thursday night, just 30 hours after what is almost certainly the world's fastest ever car crash, Richard Hammond suddenly sat up in bed, opened his eyes and asked what had happened."
Clarkson, who told him he had been in a car accident, said that Hammond then got out of bed and walked shakily to the lavatory.
