If you want a proper jacket for winter to keep you warm especially if you work outside, get yourself a black goretex sas style smock.

I have a real one which i wear in winter and its top notch, mine was free but would retail for £200-£300. This is only a work coat and def not a fashion item, unless you live in sierra leone

This coat looks similar in style:

North Face, or Rab jackets are definatley the best in terms of durability and warmth if your looking for a warm jacket.

Rab - try Summits in Paisley if you know it

Mine has no name in it and has zip in hood fleece etc, more practical for outdoor stuff rather than in town shopping in the rain.

Mate, there is no way in hell I am walking about with a nice Gortex jacket with reflective armbands and 2nd Officer RFA stamped on the front of it..... People would think I was a fud....

As for the Scottish seasons, you're right. But what I'm really worried about is January last year I was on exercise in somewhere very very North in the world, and I went ashore one night in Norway and nearly forze to death. I was wearing every warm item of clothing I had, and it was still completely freezing.

Yeah been there done that in Hammerfest in December. You need lots of layers, vest, tshirt, jumper, fleece, windproof and waterproof layer, plus most importantly protect your extremities with warm socks gloves and loads of layers on your head (scarf, balaclava, hat, and coat hood should do).

You'd be surprised how much difference keeping the extremities warm helps you feel overall.

Phil - my mate works for sky sports news and spends hours n hours waiting in car parks outside football grounds for interviews. He has one of those mega North face down parkas... it weighs about 10 to 15 kilos lol.. its absolutely NUTS...

he says some of the footy photographers wear those and 5 layers under them during winter... nuts.. it really is a serious jacket. Its so much like a duvet that the second u put it on in the house u want to fall asleep. Without doubt its the daddy

If it's the nuts why do you have to wear 5 layers underneath it? My schott jacket I can't wear anything but a tshirt under it on the coldest of winters days.. As it's too fucking hot.
