Default newbie wants sum advice....

allo all,

ok, im new to this site and was wondering if anybodys got some buying advice on mk2 orions?

Basically, i might have the chance to purchase a supposedly well cared for, rare 1600e with rs bodykit etc.

can anyone tell me what to look out for when buying, i.e rust places, what to look for with regards to the engine, any common problems etc?

the reason im asking is because it has a short mot and dont wanna land myself with a lemon!

thanks in advance guys

sills inner and outer, espically behind the kit

also at the rear end pass and drivers side of inner rear quarters behind bumper

engine wise whats the miiage on it, cvh are ok if looked after, just check for smoke on start up, rattles etc,

99% at that age will be rusty just have a good poke around everywhere battery tray and rear chassis rails are common rust spots along with sills front and rear panels scuttle panel etc

engines are good if oil changed regular dont worry too much about noisy tappets unless they sound like they have no oil in em lol, prone for wear on the valve stem seals but there a piece of piss to put right.

good luck

thanks for the advice.

mileage is about 88k i think.

i know it needs one bit of welding. a plate about 1x1 inch on the floor but not sure where. he just said under the carpet in the corner.

just trying to get hold of him.

its doing my head in cos i wanna get it asap so i got time to do the welding and anything else before mot.

will a hole of any kind fail the mot, does anybody know, or only if it weakens the structure?

if its within 300mm of a prescribed area ie suspension/steering/seatbelt mounts

1x1 inch normally turns into 12x12 inch when ya start poking it

If its a genuine 1600E it will have 1600E on the paint plate on the slam panel will be a british built car with a chassis no. starting with SFA. Colours will be either Mercury grey, Diamond White or Raven Black the later being specific to the 1600E only. With a 1600E being british built they never seem to be as well finished off as a german made one and as a result don't tend to last as long. Another way of telling is who made the glass. British built cars have Triplex and german one's are built with Securit. As above with regard to corrosion. Other areas to check are around the rear screen on the rear quarters and the sunroof area of the roof skin. One other thing to note is that the 1600E was MFi fuel management and never came with the later EFi management. Hope this helps

no its not my first car at all. ive had loads, including a couple mondeo's, a corolla gti-16 (great car), an original audi coupe quattro, a couple astras, a sierra, a rover 200 plus loads more i dont remember. currently got an alfa romeo 146 ti which is the only car ive loved and hated at the same time!

wanted to get back into fords properly for a while.

just sold my last mondeo to my neighbour who's gonna put the 2ltr zetec lump into either his mk2 escort ghia daily driver or into his mk1 1300gt project car (10 year project so far).

If its in good condition you cant go wrong with a 1600E, will hold its value if its in good nick seeing as they were limited in number from the factory. The big areas to watch for have been covered above but as has been said if you need any more advise pop over to the Orion Register Forum and ask. We are a helpful bunch and you dont have to join the club unless you want to
