YEP! me too... just do it! And take kev's choice of lens seriously as an alternative to the standard "kit" lens - unless you need the wide angle end, the 28-105 gives a more useful range for every day IMO - go for the f3.5 version
a few examples from last visit to castle combe, again heavily compressed but gives you an idea

Think I'll go for it
Ł479 from Jessops with the USM version of the kit lens, a canon bag and a free Jessops bag

I'll have a look at other lenses later on.

Also worth considering is a spare battery.

It doesn't come with a card They're pretty cheap though so I should be able to slip that past the missus without her noticing (she's only agreed to the camera).
The battery life is superb apperantly so I won't get a 2nd battery straight away.

careful, there are 2 versions of this length - the F4.5/5.6 USM isn't as nice

sigma do some good lenses too, but be careful with aftermarket lenses, especially Sigma, to ensure they are compatible with later (300D/350D etc) digital bodies - earlier Sigma ones are not compatible! Hard to say where the breakpoint is, but somewhere around 2002. Sigma used to offer an upgrade to enable the early lenses to work with later digital bodies, but AFAIK that is no longer an option.
