You know how you take the pic with a digital camera then there is a delay for what seems like ages before an image is captured, what is that about? and can I stop it doing that?
Im off to spectate at a rally down the borders way at the weekend but when I take pics of fast moving stuff ie rally cars at high speed you have to guess when it will be in the view finder when I press the button
I end up with a pic of a boot or just the road
Any advice?

Its more than likely to do with the shutter speed... read your manual and find out how to speed it up in the settings.
Either that, or you have to focus first by semi pressing the button, then when its focussed, fully depress it.

He was trying to be helpful. Most digital cameras have a shutter delay. It's because theyre not very good cameras. Some of the more expensive compact digital cameras have very little delay but the only cameras with virtually no delay are digital SLR's.

It is called shutter lag, all camera's have it, but the better (more expensive) camera's have shorter delay time. (My Canon 30d has a shutter lag of about 0,25s including time to autofocus, and 0,065s prefocussed)
Most digital compact camera's have too long shutter lag for sport / cars.
Nothing u can do about it, exept buying a new camera.
Edit to add: you could try to pre-focus, most compact cameras have slow autofocus.
