I see Barry Squibb once a month at Castle Combe, as he races an EVO (VI RS Sprint) in the Mobile w/screens Castle Combe race series.......does VERY well

He told me that he'd love to do rallycross at the top level again but that the Come Race series is less than 20th the cost ser season....so "cheap" motorsport.

Schanche for me. total nutcase of a driver
remember seeing him at Lydden Hill when he tested his RS2000 4x4. Was sideways halfway down hairy hill but didnt ease off.
been so many others ive seen over the years but i did like the days of the RS500 vs the BMW M3's and also when you had the RS200's and 6R4's everywhere.

they should bring back a GB round of the European championship or get the Grand Prix going again at Brands Hatch

 

while most where at fordfair i was at knockhill watching the rally cross & fook do they go

dermot carneagie(sp) was pretty good like

never watched the full thing as i was there with freinds who where doing the rally thing

I did ask him, he said the circuit racing his EVO was much cheaper and safer as it's a true non contact sport.........although looking at the Rob Ballard + Mark Harrison crashes at Combe (one writen off EVO and the other one badly damaged) and now the Simon Norris crash..........Barry might review the "cheap" "safer" & "non contact" part of his statement

 

He had too , ford turned down the Transmission that mike had developed alongside Schanche .
I Work next door to John welch , his son drives an A class leon cupra and i look after an R class, he loves a chat and is full of stories still !

How come those Escorts are leaving the RS200s for dead? Thought RS200 were always very successful in rallycross, though I assume its was very early days so lack of development?

1 the bloke who commisioned the car was the legend in my avatar who knew how to build and drive a escort,2 he used a Zakspeed turbocharged Bda engine that was found in Capri Touring cars only adapted for Rallycross by the boss of Zakspeed Formula 1 team,3 the transmission was designed by a Hewland Formula 1 transmission specialist who designed the gearbox in his shed and the Xtrac company was founded from that Escort onwards. 4 the bodyshells were built by Gartrac who built escort mk2's for ford motor company and were the best in the buisness then and now with escort motorsport fabrication.
and yes your right rs200's were new back then and largly undeveloped,the Escort Xtracs were state of the art cars although looked like 200 quid wrecks .

I used to love going to Croft in the late 80's for Rallycross action. I still have the European champ programme somewhere. I especially liked the more rarer cars like the Lancia S4 and Dimi Mavropoulos sinister black Audi sport SWB Quat. The sight of Schanche, Gollop, Mavropoulos, Schie, Rennison etc. racing to the first corner abreast was phenominal.

 

i always thought everybodys favorite was Martin Schanche...

I remember watching Schanche on eurosport back in the days when I was a little boy. Don't remember much from those mk3/4 RWD Escorts but ofcourse I still have clear pictures in my mind of the RS200 and Cosworths

Those cars just do more to me then the current rallycross cars.

 

its about 1983-84 and i'm watching world of sport with dickie davies and the rallycross comes on from brands hatch. theres the fella in my avatar being interviewed by a reporter and he has a english accent i have never heard before but speaks perfect english,he is driving a right hand drive escort mk3 4x4 with wide alloy arches and they are talking about Zakspeed and how much power the car has. after the interview and the cars are lining up the camera pans into Mr Rallycross's Xtrac Escort and Murray Walker says how the car has a boost dial in which to turn the power full on and get a "Super Start", the lights just about to go green and Martin hits it with full power and the camera cuts to a distant above camera shot showing the car storm into the lead and dominate the race.
that sticks in my mind from when i was a nipper,maybe one day that clip will be shown on youtube.
