kelv- cheers for clarifying it all mate, all i wanted was the large T38, i known that form the start
as i said im gettin head work done, greys and low comp, always had in mind that 430bhp figure,
just confused as people including tuners gave me all different info
so im going to get a TT T38 then.
Thanks peeps!

then you will be running it at a relatively low boost which will mean spool uptime will be affected
Think maybe you should seek some advice before jumping in and buying a turbo without understanding its characteristics and how it will affect the delivery of the power.

think what Ryan was trying to say is the TT T38 is suited for the bigger power figures.
if your after 430bhp, the Universals T38 may suit you better.
as i say, seek your engine tuners advice first before you purchase.

i dont mind a bit of lag as long as when it kicks in it pulls like a train, when would it usually kick in then? The universal t38 and the TT 38

completely depends on how the cams are timed.
and it wont pull like a train as it wont be running large boost firgure to get 420-430, so will feel sluggish compared to a T34/T38 running a larger boost spike as it will come in with much more punch and spool up alot faster.
This is why people run boost spikes, to get the turbo's spooling faster.
Its like running a T4 turbo at 400 bhp and running a T34 at 400bhp. The T34 car will absolutely destroy the t4 car.

sorry for sounding ignorant but wouldnt the t4 then win when the turbbo kicks in?? or would it not kick in as much as you would be running a lower boost like you said?

If the T4 car had 500bhp and the T34 car 400bhp then the T4 car would gain on the T34 car once it started boosting but with two cars running the same power you will just be left behind in the T4.

I'm not very intelligent at all.........But I think that when you compare the performance of different sized turbos, you should realise that there are often compromises involved.........
Ideally we all want a turbo that spools up like a T25 but delivers the clout of a T4................but that ain't possible due to each turbo's "effective" or "efficiant opperating range"..........well the explanation is something like that anyway.........I would let Stu/Chip/Karl explain if they see this thread

Basically.... what everyone is trying to say is if you have to ask the question and don't really understand the reponses then you shouldn't be speccing your own engine!!
Speak to your tuner!!
What cams are you planning on speccing to complement the turbo??

ideally yes.
You dont buy a turbo and run it at power well below its compressor map
you buy a turbo to run at its optimum power output.
So as a very rough guide
T3 (230-300)
T34 (330-400) Depending on Housings
T38 (400-450) Depending on Wheels and Maching Work
TT38 (440-480)
T4 (470-520)

Would anybody argue/comment regarding my suggestions for MAX reccomended power shown below?
Up to 280 BHP: T25 (aka T28)
Up to 320 BHP: T3
Up to 350 BHP: T34 with .48 exhaust housing
Up to 380 BHP: T34 with .55 exhaust housing
Up to 410 BHP: T34 with .63 exhaust housing
Up to 450 BHP: T38 (Universal Turbos)
Up to 480 BHP: T38 (Turbo Technics)
Up to 530 BHP: T4
All of the above assumes that the engine is spec'd to match the turbo chosen

Sounds perfect to me Doug.
Luke, how can YOU choose a turbo, then the cams and then speak to your tuner?
surely you should speak to your tuner first as im sure he will have a better idea of what turbo/cams will suit your engine better.
