Does anybody know what the distance is between speed signs on a 30mph road.
How far away is a camera van aloud to be from a sign stating the road speed ?
Thanks
Steve.

Speed limits start at the first sign unless there is a system of streetlighting, in which case the limit is 30 unless signs say otherwise.
Don't know that there is a set distance for the vans to be parked - maybe that Pepipoo website will have info?

as above, but if the street lights are less than 200 yards apart it's a 30 unless otherwise posted
regardless of that, you MUST not be excceding the set limit on a road at the point where the signage shows the speed you can be doing
so, if you come out of a nsl limit into a 30 you MUST not exceed the 30 in the 30 and msut be entering the 30 zone at no more than 30 mph
if you are entering a nsl zone and are leaving a 30 mph zone, you CANNOT accelerate upto the nsl until you have passed the sign allowing you to do so
they did my mate for this on the A27 coming out of brighton or whatever bit of the world is down there, he was doing 59mph 30 yards away from the nsl sign on a dual carriage way on the way into the nsl limit

Steve,
I can get you the information you require if your a bit more specific. Do you mean from a change in speed limit ie from national to 30 mph, and how close to the national speed limit the van can be parked ? there are guidelines on this I seem to recall.
Cheers

Speed limits
103: You MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for your vehicle (see the table below). Street lights usually mean that there is a 30 mph speed limit unless there are signs showing another limit.
thats what the highway code says
but fook cuting and pasting this lot

section 82, subsection 4 states that:
"The reference in subsection (4) to a system of street lighting, with lamps not more than 200 yards apart, concerns the way in which 30mph speed limits are indicated in built-up areas. Where a system of street lighting exists, a road is automatically a 'restricted road' under the terms of section 82 of the Act, and carries a 30mph speed limit, unless the highway authority has taken steps to revoke restricted road status and apply a different speed limit. In that case, the speed limit must be indicated by signs in accordance with subsections (1) and (2) of section 85. (In Scotland, only C-class and unclassified roads are automatically restricted roads if they have street lights. For a 30mph limit to apply on street-lit A- and B-roads, the highway authority must take positive action either to apply restricted road status or a 30mph speed limit order.)"
so there you go

The minimum distance the camera has to be from its target, will be set out in the Home office type approval for the system in use.
Type approvals are not available online for public viewing.
When mobile cameras first came out and they used rubber strips on the road, for speed detection, they were only about 25 mtrs away from the camera.
I would guess thats still about the minimum now.

Surely the camera van can be as close to the sign as it likes. You're supposed to be doing the speed the sign says when you go through it. If you're not then you're speeding. Simple really.
