Default Escort Cossie Steering Problems

A friend of mine has got a problem with his steering on his cossie. When he steers, it keeps going tight then loose then tight again.

He thinks that one of the UJ's have gone but when he went to fords, the picture brought up by Microcat looks different to the one that is on the car. He even got it ordered in and it is completely different to the one on his car.

Fords only lists the one shown on microcat so does anyone know of a different type thats available? He needs the bit that comes out of the bulk head going into the steering rack.

Cheers,

Dave

You sure the belt hasn't lost a few teeth or that the fluid doesn't need topping up?

Mine did that and it was a fluid leak (ew) as Mike says.

I just don't like to reply to these things as I invariably look stupid (although sometimes I'm bang on )

Thanks for the replies guys,

No fluid level is fine, it definately feels mechanical.

We've tried 2 different dealers now, and my one is usually spot on. Someone else told me to ring Woodford garage to see if they come up with anything but i thought i'd ask on here first.

Any other ideas?

Mine did that ages ago. I think the rack was changed in the end. As I said it was a while ago though, but I remember it not being fluid. It was exactly as you described it, suddenly becoming very difficult to steer! Which was a bit worring at "cossie speeds". Sorry I cant be any more specific, but changing the entire rack fixed it for me.

Good luck!

Mat.
