)zorst out the back of the car WAS the bollox, first stripped car i remember or that sticks in my head at that time, cossie management,,,,,,,, there was others about ( even turbo touches car had cossie managment for ages) but hes car was the one that we remember that had it fitted and we all followed HIM like sheep
well apart from the M3 bit
the car has pulled 13.3 or 13.1 second quarters so thats a merit to see what the potential was....that was again with low boost and the 5500rpm rev limit....done at brunters at a fiesta turbo thrash IIRC....oh and beat a twin turbo noble till James topped out at 5500rpm PMSL

I'm gonna agree with DazC here tbh, it's a red S2 with a dodgy front bumper and a dodgier bonnet, thats it
Nothing as far as i can tell to get excited with.
I have heard it mentioned loads of time on here and often wondered what was sooo special about it, now i know, not a awful lot

Wasnt he the first to do the cut out front bumper? I had a feature of him in the late 90s in Revs magazine when he had just done it. Id certainly never seen anything like it before hand.

Seems you know very little about the car, and in this kind of situation its best not to comment otherwise you look like a TIT.
The car was far more than a red S2 with a dodgy front bumper and bonnet.
It was an absolute weapon, unlike most of todays youth who have all the body kits and no power this car had the look and all the power to go with it, especially in its final incarnation.
Put it like this, it beat an R34 Skyline to 115mph at only 7psi of boost and a rev limit of 5500rpm.
I know, I was in both cars with Steve B driving when we did it, on a Saturday afternoon in Letchworth.
As has been said, James broke the mould in many ways with the front bumper, the stripped out look, which is all the rage now, but wasnt that popular 4 years ago, the exhaust out the back panel was something else too.
All the mods were done with attention to detail and a professional finish.
They arent to my tastes as I hate RS Turbos... but I can appreciate what he did and respect him for that.
Shame others seem to be either jealous of the attention the car still gets or lack the maturity to appreciate other peoples work and innovation.
For me the car was a Legend even though it didnt break any records
.but I dont think that was what the car was all about.
The fact the car was at the forefront of the scene for so long makes it a legend in my eyes! It gave inspiration to other owners; it showed that there were other people out there who didnt mind spending serious amounts of cash on old RSTs!!
The car was not to my taste but I deffo respect what it was all about!

I think its just a case of different peoples interpretation of the word 'Legend'.
There are a number of cars in the RS scene that are legendary. The main one that springs to mind is Martin's. To me, that is a legend because of how far and wide you can read about it. All across the world in all different car 'scenes'. It really is the ultimate RS, most will agree. To gain respect from people driving supercars worth hundreds of thousands is the stuff of legends and it wouldn't look out of place on a poster on a the wall of a teenagers bedroom amongst pictures of Porsche's and Ferrari's. A similar thing applies to Rod's.
Oli's and Jamie's to me are the iconic cars. They have been on the scene for years. Done the results, look good and therefore deserve the term.
There have been a few RST/FRST's that have broken the 10 second 0-100 and into the 12's over the 1/4. How many of us can say who they are? Not many, I bet. Why aren't they considered 'legends'?
SOY was certainly a VERY nice looking car. I remember it from when it was practically standard looking, putting in a pretty respectable 0-60 time at National Day, many years ago, when it had 'Danger - Emits Flames' on a sticker near the exhaust. However, there are alot of RST's on the scene that look as good. Take Stevenebm's (which I know had some of the parts from SOY). That is one seriously nice looking RST.
For the record, a low-spec R34 Skyline doesn't really do big things in terms of performance until over 100mph. Until then, it is really a bit of a heavy bus. At 7psi, I would imagine that SOY was over 200bhp and quite driveable, with good grip, so would perform well. In terms of power-to-weight, in certain situations I am not surprised that it saw off a hefty car.
Thats my tuppence worth......

Tony, I'm not disagreeing at all that Oli's and Jamie's cars are fabulous and indeed do probably deserve the legend term themselves, (and most likely already known as that to some people). Maybe it's because they are still around out-performing exotic cars, still pushing boundaries that they are not perceived as legends..yet. After all, don't legends only become so after they have gone ??
Christian,
In all aspects of life its not the actual ability/content/acheivement that makes something a legend its how others perceive something.
Take music for example, there are some excellent bands who never make it, not because they arent good, but its down to having the 'x factor', exposure in the public eye etc etc
SOY did loads of shows, was in plenty mags and was just generally out and about.
Films.. there have been some great films that have been box office flops...
Books.. again there have been some excellent works of literature that have flopped...
SO just accept it.... SOY's a LEGEND........ get over it, move on

Imho you're the tit going on about a legend of a car [which lets face it the car is still only a tin object, the legend is the guy who actually had the skill to design/build the innovations on it]
I see him alot and the chances of him ever doing another S2 are pretty slim..... he loves the M3 and has bought a house now... but has said that he'd really like a Escort Cossie...
Tell you summit funny..... when he did the whole exhaust outta the rear panel thing he came to me about 5 minutes after (I was working at SCC at the time) and was in total shock to what he had done and was seriously thinking "what the fuck have I done"
I loved the whole thing tho as I'd never seen it done b4 and it takes balls to try summit different
Whuch is why people probably liked the car sooo much....I mean 3 cover cars of magazines can't be wrong can they???
Steve

To be honest, the pictures don't do it justice. The first time I saw the car in the flesh was at TOTB3 in 2004 when we were both running. I was amazed at the quality of the work. Although some of the mods were not to my taste, I could appreciate the time and money that went it to it.
The only criticism I can think of is that it wasn't built with a particular purpose in mind, that is to say it was effectively a show car with a very powerful engine. Bits like the showcage, big wheels with low profiles and dumped in the weeds stance did nothing for its 1/4 mile times.
I chatted to James a few times on the day and found him to be a top bloke. Its a shame he never accheived the performance that the car was potentially capable of.

A Legend in the industry, a truly famous RST, giving inspiration to many RS owners out there, bumper cut outs, bad boy bonnet, chrome engine bays and this was all started well over 6 years ago!!!...
One of the first RST's on cossie management, along side the infamous Q plate of Jamie Going.
This car will live in the history books of our minds for a long time, a well respected car and a pleasure to see in the flesh, always well looked after, waxed and raced hard up the A127

It is deffo a legend to some people as they respect what it had done, and what it was capable of.
Ive read the odd post about it and it was well specced and a shame it didnt do anything really. But, not my cuppa in the styling department......

Not sure who has the shell now but i know stevie kept the engine for his S1 project. So some of the bits off SOY have changed hands quite a bit since it got broke lol
