External wastegates dont chatter and make the same noise as turbo stall at all, you are pefectly correct that its annoying as fuck when people keep hearing turbo stall (aka compresor surge) and referring to it as wastegate chatter!
TBH the only thing you tend to here an external wastegate like he is referring to a fucking loud exhaust gas noise from the direct to atmosphere pipe they are attached to, lol
Certain models may make a small amount of noise as they operate, i havent heard every external gate on the market so i cant comment that none of them make any noise at all definatevely, but ive been in several cars with popular makes of gate such a Tial and Turbosmart and ive never heard anything from them at all during their operation other than exhaust noise.
But anyway for them to bounce up and down like that tool says they would is a nonsense, "chatter" on a car like a cossie can last for several seconds, does he REALLY believe that a wasteage is going to be violently swinging open and shut for that long? It might bounce once possibly if it opens really quickly but its certainly not going to bounce around like that cause it would have no chance of controlling the boost if it did that.
Just ignore the fool he clearly either has no idea what he is talking about or has no idea about the noise you are referring to that people wrongly refer to as "wastegate chatter" all the time

how can anyone even think the sound is wastegate chatter gets me the wastegate is on the exhaust housing side of the turbo so how does it get back round to the inlet compressor side they must think the engine runs backwards

Nice reply from Mike as you would expect.
However, I have one question - why are you over on Scoobynet attempting to "educate" people, when you don't own a scooby, and have sketchy techincal knowledge at best?
Not a dig - just a question?

If you're going to post up something like that, wouldn't it help to have your argument in place so you don't have to resort to "back-up" from people who do know, in order to prove your original point?
Nothing wrong with Scoobynet either - I've been on there for 6 years, and if it wasn't for that site, our hero Mr Rainbird would never have proved his heterosexuality!

Explain yourself Chip - I don't post up technical topics because my techincal knowledge is decidely limited.
As for your throwaway comment, do you have a point, or was it just yet another example of a dig as you do with Phil?

It did indeed sound like it was aimed at Mike, hence my comment about the irony of it, given that you (i believe?) dont currently own a ford, or have as much knowledge as mike does.

Obviously referring to the noise made by the common finch on drawing air back through its beak membranes, definitely not that of the lesser spotted Rainbird!!

Come on even I know the 'noise' come from the wastegate (and I have extremely limited technical knowledge! Isn't that why we have technical forums, so people can educate themselves)
What else would the noise be called? The funny turkey noise? Its kind of accepted and everyone knows 'chatter' As long as its not described at 'wastegate' chatter
