Default Cometic Head Gaskets.

A lesson from IMA Racing on using this metal gasket or the WRC version.

LONG STUD THE BLOCK.

A metal gasket requires more clamping than the std bolts can do..thus premature blowing or coolant leak.

Remember also if you run a 2wd head the head bolts have small washers and at the very least you have to machine the head to take the later head bolts with the bigger washer creating better clamping....BUT long studding is IMO essential for longevity of these gasket.

Please feel free to disagree even though your wrong

..... but why do the top recognised engine builders avoid this gasket like a good dose of galloping knob rot??

Why Matt

If i was a pro tuner at the top of there game you wouldnt want to use copies cause you have to put a warranty on it!

Obviously WRC is better than the Cometic..BUT dont mean the Cometicwont do its job if installed on the correct spec.

Ok..

it's only 3dr and very early 2wd heads that have small washers, most 2wd heads use the later larger washers.

but I know Ford made yours specially with the small washers to be different...

stu, back in yer pram i aint dissing pal yeah i meant you, i was meaning that you use these mountune copy gaskets and as you are regarded as one of the top cossie tuners i was wondering what phil meant by that as i saw it as a dig at you

Mountune Copy?
I believe the Cometic is older actually

As many folk on here know, ive got Cometics running in many engines with no problems whatsoever and ive sold literally HUNDREDS and heard so far of none blowing that ive sold. 2 that ive fitted have failed so far.

1) Yes i prefer the WRC but at its price, many folks cant afford the luxury..

2) Yes some have blown recently and if it looks like they have an age limitation on them it will be noted and the info passed to future customers at decision time.

3) Yes i will use them again.

4) Yes my own car has one fitted and has done 18 not very gentle K...

When alls said and done, we are dealing with a headgasket on a 200bhp per litre engine. Many many years ago F1 engineers developed the Monoblock because they couldnt devise the perfect headgasket either so i dont feel too bad..lol

Maybe all we are dealing with here is a simple headgasket failure, maybe they have an age limitation on the materials.. as yet, no-one knows the real answer but the fact remains that far more engines with them on are fine than have failed.

Time will tell as with everything else and im sure that being PF members, you will read all about the scandal first hand.. roflol

what about this one from mountune any good?
Head gasket - 3 layer Supersteel Ref: C841
This 3 layer gasket was developed as a cheap alternative to the four layer WRC gasket. It features "fire ring technology" which results in increased sealing properties around the cylinder bore. Which allows higher boost levels to be achieved
