where can i get the equipment to regas the air con on cars?

if you just want to gas it up,you can buy cans from halfords

The cans aren't a feasible option for gassing systems day to day. You have to measure the weight of the gas in the system, not the pressure.

exactly, hence part of the reason why the machines are so damned expensive

you don't need machines though. you just need a set of gauges, a vacuum pump, a recycle cylinder, some scales and a clue about what you're doing.

the machines are just to make it easy for any monkey to be able to do it.

You don't even need scales if you really know what you are doing.

But you do need a refrigeration gas handling certificate or you may be looking at a nice fine or even jail, if you don't reclaim used gas and dispose of it correctly.

You won't even be able to purchase the refrigerant without a refrigerant handling certificate at some places,but regardless of that,if you don't know what your doing you can seriously harm yourself. It's not as simple as bang some gas in it,you have to understand how the system works,to understand whats wrong with it.
