95 Escort 1.6 Si: Modding and owning, help please
Right, I asked in a post last night whether to keep my work in progress Golf GTi that does need a hell of a lot of work. Basically I need a small bit of welding around one sill, a full respray and maybe a couple of new doors and new alloys as the previous owner had 13s on it!
Now, the car also has no VIN plate in the engine bay and looks to have been rebuilt at the front end. Can anybody check the hit lsit for me? I do have some old MOT dox around somewhere so the VIN number will be on them.
Basically I asked whether the Escort Si 1600 would be a better drive and as expected was told no. As a result was gonna keep the golf and spend the extra cash to do it up. It is extremely fast and I know the Escort as standard won't keep up. BUT I just did an online quote with Liv Vic. I'm still on provisional at 22, probably for another 2 months, and was happy to work on the car and learn as I go while I get my license. I was previously quoted £1600 insurance for it. Now they're saying £1900!! I would struggle to afford it and am losing the belief that this car is worth this kind of expense.
Now, I have seen an N reg Escort Si (new shape) for £395 at a slavage yard and it is described as having light rear damage and from the pics it looks like it just wants the rear bumper replacing. They did me a quote TPFT for £1300 and this would sit a lot better with me.
If I sell can I still have fun in the Escort and how easy/hard would it be to get the engine to a modest 150bhp and what kind of money are we talking?
Sorry for the long read but I'd appreciate any help.
Cheers,
J

Not a big fan of Fiestas tho and for some reason it would have to be a mk2 or earlier even tho they will quote me on the Golf! Insurance companies are crazy. I'd rather have an RS turbo to be honest (Escort) but I doubt I'd find one that wasn't stolen or rusted to fook at that kind of price!

have u tried other companies for quotes?? www.elephant.co.uk are quite good and u can get realistic quotes online. liverpool vic have gone a bit funny lately with there online quotes i dunno y.
without major major money thrown at the 1600si and i do mean major! dont even dream of gettin anywear near 150bhp out of it. as it has a restrictive engine which doesnt allow big bhp figures without major work. but if u wanted to go with a engine swop any bigger zetec engine will slot right in. and if say u got a 1.8 zetec lump in 150bhp is easily acheiveable.
altho sayin this the 1600 si not all bad, with a decent induction kit and zorst with decat pipe u'll be lookin at about 100bhp. not bad for a start off car. if ur lookin to run the car for a few yrs build up some no claims get the car lookin good and start collectin parts for ur engine swop (very cheap to get hold of zetec engines) then the si's a good car to go with.
