Why do dip sticks snap off on 4x4 cosworths ???

Why do dip sticks snap off on 4x4 cosworths ???
Strip the car down today to fit an new oil pump and found 4 broken dip sticks in the sump they snap about an inch from the bottom 
??
Anyone else had this happen to them why do they break off ????

I know that 2 that have snap off since i have had the car 
i can remember if they where not at the right angle they would make a clicking noise where they where hitting the crank
Only thing i could think of is i may have the wrong dipstick tube fitted ???

Lets hope it's done in time for ford fair then mate. How much pump cost anyway? Just in case I have to do mine

Yup ,this happened my 4x4 cossie earlier this year ........
and i have never came across the broken bit ,not had sump of yet but had a 'magnetic bendy doofer'(cant remember name for tool) in sump plug hole to find it and found bugerall .......
but then the car did start smoking and slight ticky knocky sound wee while after this and never had any issues with burning oil before
will find out soon when in bits

when i took the sump off my Yb for it had one in the bottom!!
wondered WTF!!! lookin at the dipstick and it was all there,
had me pretty confused
didnt realise it was almost known thing to happen!!!
they Do seem to sit very close to the crank,
so perhaps if they dont go back in right one time it could hit it
