Default Flywheel questions

Right I took my standard clutch and flywheel off and they looked like this:-

It had been slipping real bad and the flywheel and cover both had heat spots galore even thou the organic plate was mint looking

Now I took it to the local machine shop and they did a grind and put new lugs in and it came back like this.

The machineshop guy said it wasn't very flat but it is now..

Ok my questions are is this enough for what I want (440bhp engine) I'll be putting it back with a new AP 6paddle cluthc and cover. Does it need lighting or any kind or balancing?

I've always understood heavier flywheels are better for launching? which is what I want

I don't mean to worry you but that looks wrong to me. The lip where the dowels are situated is usually left alone on a lightened flywheel which suggests to me that its important for spacing the pressure plate away from the clutch disc. I maybe wrong but I think it would be worth checking before you put it back on the car. That is if you don't already know if its ok yourself.

Anyway if its been machined then it will need balancing. I base this advice on the fact that once my flywheel was lightened, it was also balanced.

I hope this helps.

Why lighten a 4x4 one when you can fit a 2wd one and it is much lighter

What I'm getting at is I don't want a lightned flywheel if it will be harder to launch.. and if I don't need it lightned will I need it balanced?

Its been machined, so I say yes. But I would get it confirmed that its ok as it is, with that edge taken off.

If its just been skimmed it will be no more out of balance then it was prior to skimming (in fact it should be more in balance).

If it's been lightened then balancing is a good idea but it should be pretty much balanced spot on if the lightening has been done correctly - i.e. same amount of metal removed from points perpendicular to each other.

A lighter flywheel will make launching more difficult.

Edited to say: I've skimmed literally thousands of flywheels incluing probably 50ish Cosworth ones; the dowels are removed and the entire flywheel is skimmed. Metal removal is normally only 0.1mm to 0.3mm unless you have a flywheel with lots of high and low spots ... just like one I have on my desk at the moment
