Found this on another site

Evening peeps!

I was talking to a friend (yes I have friends that are not landy mad!!!!!) the other day who is a chemist, to be more precise his job entails analysing oil, fuel, coolant and air filters on the behalf of insurance companies. He can tell by testing the oil if there is anything wrong with the way your engine is running. Whats even more impressive is that he can tell you which part of your engine is wearing by what metals he finds in the oil and filter! Cool eh?

Anyway he had some very interesting things to say;

1) The oil filter magnets that supposedly attract metallic debris to the sides of the filter are NOT necessary, the filter sifts out more than enough!

2) Oil additives do work, such as slick50, molyslip and other PTFE based products. They really do reduce wear significantly! and that goes for engine oil and gearbox oils!!!

3) Performance air filters (such as K+N) are far better for your engine than paper ones. They filter the air far more efficiently!

4) Anti-freeze/coolant that you put in to your coolant system can actually harm your engine! If you put too much anti-freeze in (which we all do!) the coolant becomes over saturated with the anti-freeze and crystalizes out. It usually cyrstalizes out in the radiator blocking the cores and restricting/stopping the flow of coolant round the radiator. Therfore allowing the engine to overheat!!!! Never a good thing!!
He says it is very important that the correct proportions of anti-freeze to water are adhered to and that you flush the coolant system at least once a year.

5) Oil changes have to be done at the correct intervals if not sooner, the same goes for air and fuel filters and flushing your radiator.

6) I have been wondering for a while if distilled water is better than tap water when filling your radiator after flushing it! Being purer and all! And apparently it is! Yay me!
Seriously, tap water can contain many additives, such as chlorine, floride, iron, calcium, magnesium, ect.
What happens when your coolant system heats up is that the waters ability to hold impurities lowers and then the additives deposit themselves on to surfaces, such as the inside of your pipes or radiator core. Like when your kettle furs up! Well the same thing happens in your radiator! Hence the reason to flush it frequently!
Now distillied water being purer makes your coolant system more efficient and able to contain more anti-freeze!

7) Fuel tanks contain alot of crap that blocks up your fuel filter, he suggests flushing your tank every now and again. He said it is usually paint from the inside of the tank and dirt that gets in to the tank when re-fueling!

Some very interesting information that I did not know, I am sure that some of you do but some might not!

Hope this enlightens you, as it did me

Cheers
