IMO the RC30 is still the best of the homologation specials , and to answer your question, the reason it is SO good, is that it is the Escort Cossie of the bike world (but without the shonky gearbox ), built for homologation purposes to allow Honda to go racing, so it has all the best bits on it that you could want. Fully blue-printed versions can put out 115-120bhp, which for a 750cc bike is STILL impressive even today. The build quality is unbelievable and like Cam said, it defined the progression of super-bikes in the late 80's early 90's .

Also if you think RGVs are fast, you need to have a go on a GSXR1000K5 make's your palms sweat and scares the living shit out of you .

Well I must be a girl, as I find the acceleration from 0-120 (flat out through the gears), palm sweatingly scary (but fun ). After that, the acceleration isn't that amazing, so an R1 in 6th gear is HOMO .

Dated and old now but the RC30 has the sweetest steering of any bike I've ever ridden.

8 Valves per cylinder yes but you've missed out the best bits
Oval pistons, twin conrods per piston essentially creating a V8

bloody expensive HRC kit parts for the rc30 and rc45
my mate changed from rc45 to yamaha R7 in 1999.
the r7 was a differnt league on the handling bit
but the noise of the gear driven cams and the twin mufflers on the rc45 aaaahhhhhh
