gear driven cams, loads of clever technology, still held the outright lap record of the TT until 2 years ago

I'd have a 30 over a 45 anyday.
A defining bike for a generation. There are an incredible number still in their crates as they are a guaranteed investment

IMO the RC30 is still the best of the homologation specials , and to answer your question, the reason it is SO good, is that it is the Escort Cossie of the bike world (but without the shonky gearbox ), built for homologation purposes to allow Honda to go racing, so it has all the best bits on it that you could want. Fully blue-printed versions can put out 115-120bhp, which for a 750cc bike is STILL impressive even today. The build quality is unbelievable and like Cam said, it defined the progression of super-bikes in the late 80's early 90's .

Wide open throttle in sixth gear at 30mph?

Well I must be a girl, as I find the acceleration from 0-120 (flat out through the gears), palm sweatingly scary (but fun ). After that, the acceleration isn't that amazing, so an R1 in 6th gear is HOMO .

But you're too to give it large in the lower gears - I can imagine you short shifting into sixth to 30mph, THEN winding the throttle open .

How about one of these a NR 750 HONDA

cost £32,000 when new

Stephen hendrey has one

http://www.sportbikez.net/pictures/mod/nr750

Now this was special engineering,

8 valves per cylinder
ovual pistons

Special but very very pointless

8 Valves per cylinder yes but you've missed out the best bits

Oval pistons, twin conrods per piston essentially creating a V8

bloody expensive HRC kit parts for the rc30 and rc45

my mate changed from rc45 to yamaha R7 in 1999.

the r7 was a differnt league on the handling bit

but the noise of the gear driven cams and the twin mufflers on the rc45 aaaahhhhhh
