there is a place in brum that will fit you a ford 302 for around the Ł1200 mark

all you need to sort is the gearbox, prop and exhausts and thats all it takes

find a 302
300 horses 300 ft/lbs
most of that is most of the way through the rev range
you just need to fuel it like the cossie and theres plenty more power to come with a bit of fiddling

everyones happy

and when you think that a set of forged pistons for the V8 can cost you from around the Ł100 mark...............................

imho to do it "properly" youre looking at a similar (if not higher) budget than a big-spec YB.

yes it can be done on the cheap, but you have to expect things to break

you can buy an engine for Ł300
bolt it in
job done
how is that more expensive than a big spec yb?
there are absoltuly LOADS of engines for sale and considering that the yanks have been making V8's go faster a LOT longer thancosworth have had the yb in production, i think they know a thing of 2 about going quickly

all you need to do is buy ppc and everything becomaes clear

What you want are the South African XR8 bits.. subframe.. mounts.. and a bunch of other bits to get a Ford 302 (windsor) bolted straight in!! T5!

I saw a rover V8 converted Sierra back in the 80s, and I'm sure I once read "anywhere the Rover V8 will go, a small block chevy will fit."

dojj, theres more to making a proper car than just slapping a big engine in any old shed.

youve got to look at uprating the rest of the parts around the engine.

especially considering a big power V8 will be producing lots of transmission breaking torque

what ab out the brakes? the diff? the rear beam? the gearbox that suits the engine's power delivery? the suspension? the fuel system etc. etc.

you can easily spend 10k on a sierra and not even touch the enginebay (trust me i know )

My dads mustang has a 302 in it. Its an auto but goes well and there's shitloads of tuning bits for it. Some cams and a holley carb and it would fly in a sierra. Do it to a 3dr tho!

Pretty much without doubt I would go with an LS1 or LS6 if I were doing this conversion. One off the best small block v8's currently available IMO.

Personally, I wouldn't go with a Rover/Buick V8.

Agree with above really.

A new crate engine isn't ridiculous money and very reliable or go for a small block chevy.

My mate will be selling his later this year for sensible money.

Runs low 10's on nitrous dragging a heavy old Corvette.

Rover V8's are far too weak tbh.

Speak to Danny from Adrenaline as he will be able to point you in the right direction with what to use

We went throught this option before didnt we ginge?!
I was under the impression Rover V8s were pishh tbh.
Ive got a really good guide in an old street machine giving the weight, dimensions and tuneability are all assessed. Very interesting.

A Ford small block IS smaller and i think lighter than a Rover. And more powerful and tunable i think. Ill have a check.

if you are going to put an engine in you aren't going to worry about the fueling because you aren't going to drive it anywhere are you
run it on carbs and put a bigger pump in the way
if you are converting an efi car you'll have to reduce pressure more than likely anyway

Give me a supercharged 32v v8 4.6 over a yb any day after all bog standard its 390bhp quick supercharger change and 500 easy and still not over stressing the engine.

Dont get me wrong im a fan of the yb but when you look at what you can do with the 4.6 v8 it starts to make you think why the hell do i bother with a 4 pot when i could have 8.

And besides any thing else no matter what v8's sound so sexy lol

I'm thinking a few quid Spadge, cant see it being that cheap although the healthy torque figures would make it seem worthwhile

This is what you need, everyone else is totally missing the point.

Spending a fortune on a brand new Ford/Chevy smallblock for about 350bhp

XR8 conversion parts are out there and sold by a guy called Jim Deberry in America as V8 conversions for the Merkur XR4tis. The parts cost a lot and god knows how much it would be to import them.

Off the shelf conversion parts in this country are barely in existance, places like Magnum engineering are supposed to do engine mounts but I've never known anyone use them.

Pete (Doh) from the XROC has just done this conversion and despite conciously keeping the costs down where he can, the whole conversion doesn't come cheap. I'm sure plenty of forumites would be happy to tell him how he should have done it though

Basically if you go the big power NA route it will cost as much as a similar power YB. If you want a V8 for the sake of having a V8 that's fine, but if you're just after big power for cheap money it's not economical.

The difference is going the turbo route, this is where they tip the balance. It's already been proven time and time again in the Mustang scene, hopefully someone will prove it here too
