Right, obviously Air Filters are water resistant, but what I am wondering is to what extent?
My air filter is sitting on my wheel arch liner like this:

What I want to do is to cut away a section of liner, mesh it up with a fine mesh to create a cold air system. My only concern is water, which will obviously get through the mesh and how much the filter can take before it is completely fucked.
Any ideas?

It's not about how much water the filter can take before its fucked, but more about how much water your engine can consume before it hydro-locks and bends a con-rod.
Not worth the risk IMO.
(and it DOES happen, I know someone with a new Golf that went through a puddle slightly faster than he should have and wrote the entire engine off!!)
