Default DOWNLOADING : how real is getting done for it?

I dicovered how to work bit torrents the other day

I have been a bit of a naughty boy before then with the likes of Limewire and Kazaa, but now I have figured out bit torrents.... Lets jsut say my digital music collection has grown by about 2-3gb in the past couple of days

HOw real is it getting a knock on the door and your PC and internet connection being taken away, and/or getting a hefty fine or worse, jail time

Getting a bit paranoid now lol....

PeerGuardian 2 is an IP address blocker that can prevent access to thousands of sites. It uses multiple, categorized lists and you can choose which type of site(s) you want to block, including spyware/malware related, advertising related, P2P file sharing related and more. The lists are maintained and updated by a community and you can automatically have the program download the latests lists, and also create your own based on your personal blocking preference. PeerGuardian 2 keeps track of all blocked sites, and you can easily overwrite blocking rules or add new site directly from the log viewer.

Just trying to get the hang of it myself though

Turn off HTTP blocking it's not really needed

I also use an app called protowall & my firewall allows me to import the blocklists into it but dont be kidded these apps are not a fool proofed way of not getting caught but it does reduce your chances slightly.

From my experience find a decent forum based site or private torrent site and stick to that. Stay away from all these shitty dump sites as there called old fucker can upload a movie to these and you dont know who your downloading from.

Plus the more widespread a torrent is the more chance that companies who work for the big movie companies will come across the torrent and start logging ip's so they can send what is called Cease & Desist emails to the ISP's of whoever the ip addresses belong to who will then forward the email onto you.

PeerGaurdian does that - There are a LOT of IP's in the database that don't need to be there. You'll find it blocking websites and generally being an arse, best without it tbh - They really don't care what you're downloading, so long as you're not burning it and selling it to Fred down the market.

When you installed pg2 and it asked you during install which blocklists you wanted to install did you chose the ads blocklist as well? As alot of these blocks come from ads on websites

It doesn't block sites, just incoming IP's, so why are they probing you?

What alot of bollocks And also setting your client to only download and not upload is frowned upon in any p2p filesharing community. The whole fecking point to it is SHARING

Some of the later versions of PG block (Or try to) ads, and so block HTTP traffic - I'd guess it's an option somewhere, but it's still a royal pain in the ass. That and there are MAJOR errors in the blocklist that sees to whole subnets being blocked.

With regards to it being bollocks - How many major copyright convictions has there been in the UK...? How many of them against a "light" downloader?

I haven't set mine to block peeps sharing from me - as Hockney said, it's forwned upon and end result is your downloads become slower as you are classed as a leech.....

James (EIL) - those ip addresses came from the list in PeerGuardian It's running now!

I don't have it set to BLOCK HTTP as Hockney said not to do.....

Things will change as they constantly do and you can never have enough security even if it means hassle. I dont want xyz knowing where I go and what I do, but if your happy then so be it

Doesnt matter if your a heavy downloader or first time downloading...If you get caught you face a hefty fine in this country.

You would be suprised at the amount of people being convicted in this country over illegal downloading. Just because it's not over the tabloids or on the news doesnt mean it doesnt happen.

Lately I;ve came across more & more folk in the Uk getting these cease & desist letters from there ISP's but again it all depends on your ISP and if they give a fuck about it or not and mine for the past 3+ years hasnt

very little chance of you getting cought, for a start the record company would have to prove your breaking copy right law, they cant just say "you've been logging into filesharing programs" cos its not illegal to have the software on your pc. they cant even tell its you cos they would need the isp's to release that information which they cant as it goes under the privacey act even the old bill struggle to get court orders to allow them access to this information.

basically the ppl that there after are the ppl that seed the files on a mass level, napster originally shut down cos they was hosting the files themselves.

if you think about it all the record companies would have to do is go down your local boot sale on a sunday morning and they would have cought 100's of ppl selling copied cd's etc but it never happens why? cos it would cost more money to find and take everyone to court then they would get back from damages.

I've had a couple of those letters, as have a few people I know - Never had anything come of them though. The only cases I know of reaching conviction have been pretty major, ie. topsite related and in no way anywhere near downloading a few gig of MP3's/films.

Then again, I don't really look to see what's going on in the scene lately, not saying it doesn't happen - I know the walls have eyes and that things do happen, just that PeerGaurdian is a pretty ineffective way of 'blocking' these things and that convictions for copyright infringement are still VERY rare on this side of the pond.
