After a bit of advise really peeps. I currently have a three door Cosworth amongst other toys but have been offered a 1997 E36 BMW M3 Evolution in Estoril Blue with 2 owners and 41'000 miles for £7000. Been doing my homework and M3's definitely worth more than 7k but to get it i'd need to sell my 3dr Cosworth to free up the funds. I know it's my decision at the end of the day but if you were in the same situation, what would you do ???

To be honest i don't even need a car as my place of work is four minutes walk from my house. I've got a S1 RS Turbo, a 2.8 Injection and the 3 door Cossie as well as a Mondeo Si for and as i'm always at work i don't even use them !!! The car will probably just sit in the garage and get the odd run out at the weekend.

It's really starting to get tedious as well - same old people cropping up to prove how open minded they are, and think somehow slating cossie's and bigging up m3's makes them so superior.
Yes we all know an m3 is a better piece of mechanical engineering, go and tell someone who cares!

3dr James, no doubt at all. M3's are like clitorises mate.................and I don't see the attraction with an E46 either. Driven one, it was nice but didn't get out going 'wow'.................
Mass produced cars. And as said before the M3 brigade start bleating the M3 should be nicer car to drive - it's 20 years in front as far as development goes ! Only M3 worth having IMHO is the E30. The first and the original. Bit like the 3dr really eh ?

However, were it a V10 M5 (or TBH even the V8 one or an Alpina B10) then it would be a completely different story I can assure you

The thing is you cannot possibly compare a 3dr to an m3 e36
Both different era...a 3dr is a legend car...Raw unrefined fast....m3 is modern stylish faster.(out the box)
...can be put up against the Escos though i guess as it came about in the same era..i have experience of both...the m3 is streets ahead in everything as a road car.
The escos was the biggest dissapointment to me it was a dream car for me..

Had a Cossie for 4 years, now have an M3 (my first non-Ford), so that tells it's own story, (Ford UK don't make a high power rwd any more!)
The 3dr will always be a more special car than an M3, but the M3 will always be in standard form a better car, they are from two different era's.
For your useage though, keep the 3dr, it will always be more desireable. I walk about 5 mins to work and use the M3 at weekends only, just can't be bothered with Cossie worries, hassles and bills anymore and the fear of not taking any long journies without considering a rebuild when you get it home. I have money in my pocket now, instead of in the "cossie fund".
I've had the M3 over a year now and done a few rolling road days (all consistant power) a track day and many long trips, with absoutely no trouble at all, not alot of Cossies will do this without worrying the owner about head gaskets etc (yes, I've been there).
For anyone into RWD then an M3 is a logical progression from the RWD Cossie and it keep you away from the Jap stuff!
The M3 sounds a bit cheap thuogh with that milage, like Cossies there are a fair few "colourfull" ones around.
I still say keep the 3dr, (easy cos I'm not the one fixing it!), but good luck with your choice
