Valve cut-outs on pistons
Hello all. I'm in need of more education.
Valve cut outs. Are they purely to help prevent catastrophic failures should the belt snap?
Obviously they wouldn't matter if the valve snapped, but us there enough clearance to miss the valve should the piston come up while the valve was still open?
How does this affect compression etc?
Thanks again.
David

I run 5mm deep pockets on the inlet side of the piston and 3mm on the exhaust side. My cam belt snapped (full story with pics when i get time) and i have no compression in cylinders 2,3 and 4 now So in short it doesnt garantee that the valves will be ok should the cam belt snap. Obviously you have more chance of the valves being ok with pockets than without, but as Gareth said, they are done more for the fact that you cam run different cams/timing and duration
