Default new reshells are unumbered - as posted previously

... so unless Ford or someone with the kit has restamped them (down) it will be blank under the seat flap. Ford can do this when the documentation etc is in place and the car has been inspected.

But a reshelled car "should" be inspected after completion and that includes checking it has been stamped with the new VIN number - that doesn't have to be where Ford put it, but it does have to be stamped in at least one place and must also have a metal plate with the number on it attached.

My F plate Sapph was stamped up, but I can't actually remember on my J plate one. Both my Escort Cossies were stamped down.

Thanks for the clarification Iain, that's what I meant but from direct experience the inspectors were nowhere near as fussy pre around 1995. In some areas for example, an ordinary PC would delegated the task with little assistance. One can only guess at what went on and I can testify to some cars (not just fords) remaining blank I'm afraid. Have even seen the chassis plate in an accompanying envelope!

In my case, I've had to get the Local Vehicle Licencing Office to issue a new VIN number.
Next I'm to get the number stamped in two places by the local MOT station, who issue the MOT certificate on the new VIN number. I also need to affix a metal plate with the number (big thanks to Gadget off here for the bling VIN plate).
Then the car has to go for an SVE test who report back to the LVLO that the car is stamped and passed the test before I get a reg number - either the donor plate or an age-related number.

But years ago, when I built a kit-car, two plod turned up one afternoon, had a chat, and the V5 was issued changing Ford Cortina to Eagle RV and showing the new chassis number. Everything else including date of registration and number of keepers stayed the same.

WATCH THIS VIDEO with Paul Linfoot! It’s a buyer’s guide for Cosworth and RS500

It does not matter whether it’s stamped up or down, there are more important factors he talks about. He also talks about how and why some are stamped up and others down.
