Don't think it's that common nowadays, although a partial payout + salvage *might* be an option some insurers may consider (wouldn't get your hopes up though).

Tell the accesor you would be interested in buying it back! I did this with both a Jag and a BM last year and both were 10% of the payout!

A large hammer or a sturdy bollard normally does the trick

I didn't see a grands worth of damage on that photo yesterday mate?
500 quid i would of thought should cover that!
They will only write it off if its beyone ecenomical repair ie it will cost more than X percentage of the cars worth to repair it!
Your best bet is to talk to the accesor and show him the recipts etc for money you have spent on it and also print off some adverts for similar condition cars to show them!

btw the claim can only go somewhere if you agree to their valuation! If you don't then it can never be settled and so the car cannot be officialy written off!

If you buy it back it will always be classed as a write off, BUT, I enquired about my missus car a while back (she bought a write off ) and you can get the car examined when the repairs are done and they move it off the alert file and onto another which says its been repaired and is fit for road use. Costs about a ton IIRC...
