Default Time Attack rd2 on Sunday (Pics- 56k warning)

Suprised its not been mentioned on here yet.

Steve Scott came 3rd in the Escort. Steve Fitzpatric was flying too in his Escort, but cant remember where he came.

RC Developments Evo won it, Norris Evo 2nd.

In practice im pretty sure Steve Scott was overall fastest

TBH it was totally overshadowed in an entertainment point of view by the D1, but still was good.

Nice to see the tons of ultra fast RST's in the FWD class too Or not, as the only one I saw all weekend was a white S2 broken down on the A43

Shame Time Attack is 1 car at a time, cause as absolutley incredible as the cars are, its not that entertaining IMO. Gotta be the only motorsport in the world where practice is ten times more entertaining than the actual finals.

Good job the weekend had some other entertainment...

Aye, Tiff was poo
He "Drifts" like a Cossie driver, ie power oversteer only so dont even start till halfway round the corner, and then he was all over the place.
The other driver were initiating the drift 50-100m before the end of the straight before Brooklands

Pics dont do it justice TBH, seen 100s of em, but just posted up a tiny selection.
Was way better than even the pics make it look, was insane, I know the stuff they can do more than most people, but some of the stuff even I didnt think was physically possible in a car...

It seems to defy reality that they could even get round the corner at the speed and angle they do, but to hit the clipping point seems impossible at is on the very inside of the corner.
At best you will end up on the outside of the corner, nowhere near the clipping point.

Then the Jap guys came out and was drifting at about 120deg to the direction they was travelling in, ie almost backwards (seemingly impossible, as once you past the angle your steering will go to its nigh on impossible to not spin out) so they could literally drift out the corner pointing right at the clipping point so hitting it easily.

Hard to explain without seeing it, but I watched it from about 10ft away (was on tyre wall, and they was drifting that less than a meter from the wall too) and I still dont get how they was managing it.

Also at the clipping point at the exit of brooklands (exactly on the end of the bend, so before the short straight) they had a timing beacon there, and the cars were EXITING the corner at over 100mph still, fastest out the corner was 106mph, sideways

You have to remember, Needel is a racing driver, and PROPER drifting as opposed to power oversteer is totally un-natural.

I bet a top level rally driver would be FAR better straight out the box.

Allegedly sub-700 for both of them. RC car hasnt got a huge turbo, and Norris dont run anywhere near full power.

Not methanol either.

RC car hasnt got a big turbo and front exit exhaust anymore.
Much smaller turbo and quieter twin side exits.

Time Attack is not about straight line speed anyhow.

Cant remember exact times off top of my head.

Steve Scott was 1min2secs in practice, fastest overall, with a few of the top cars all on 1min2secs.

Down the main straight his car seemed just as fast as the other 1min 2sec cars, maybe a lil slower than Norris, but not much.

In the actual Time Attack he got 1min3sec, and the winner and 2nd got 1min2sec.

Martin etc etc still have a chance yeah.

At mo, as its still mainly the tuners driving their own cars its mainly down to whos the best driver.
The real essence of Time Attack is for all the cars to have Race Drivers using them which takes out most the driver element, as Time Attack is about who has the fastest CAR rather than the best driver.

This is going to be long!!!

What a day!!!

Unfortunately due to other commitments I didn’t actually get to bed until 3am on Saturday morning and had to be up at 6:15am that same morning to get ready for Silverstone…. I wouldn’t recommend only having 3hrs 15mins sleep before entering something like this!

For me, this was the first real time I had been on track so I had been really nervous for a number of weeks, thinking “What have I done booking this!!”. After speaking to other people about Silverstone in particular, only to find out it is one of the quickest circuits in the world. Unfortunately I don’t enjoy high speed bends and my confidence (let alone driving ability) seriously lack in this area….. so hence the nervous disposition. This was further compounded by the fact that track day “virgin’s” were not entering this event in reality because it was a competition with laps being timed and some serious cars were being entered (whether they were for the Pro or Club Challenge Class). Saying all this though….. I thought it be better to be shoved in at the deep end and give it a bash. Like they say…. There is only one way to improve your driving ability and confidence and this is by getting involved and actually doing it!

Upon arrival the normal things took place, driver sign-on, scrutineering and of course peoples final vehicle preparation. We were all given space in the garages in the Pit Area and ALL the Subaru’s (barr one) were put together. This was:

PowerStation / Litchfield Imports – Pro Class
Neil Wrenn – Club Challenge
Terry Buckle – Club Challenge
Shaun Harvey – Club Challenge
Myself – Club Challenge

The first thing us Club Challenge boys did was change our normal road tyres to what ever road legal semi-slicks we were using. I had never driven my car with these type of tyres on before…. So this was something else I had no experience of! Lol

Even though I arrived at Silverstone at about 7am and the first warm-up session did not start until 9:35am, time went quickly up to that point. What with completing the above mentioned things, along with sorting out the fitment of the transponder (for vehicle timing) and also the drivers brief, it didn’t leave much time left other than for a bacon sandwich for breakfast and in my case several nervous visits to the loo!

9:35 came and we all (both the Pro and Club Challenge Class were on track at the same time – up to 32 cars) lined up for the warm-up session….. I then found out what people meant when they said this track was W I D E!!! You feel like a matchbox car on it in places! For me, this first session was probably the most scariest and knowing you are the one with the least (sorry – ZERO) experience didn’t help.

After the warm-up I went up to Race Control to get the time sheet, which in fact was for all cars, so at least you could see what you were up against and in my case how slow I was! My best time for the warm-up was 1:19’s…. but at least I wasn’t the slowest.

We then had to wait about 2hrs until the next session which was the first practice session, since the Drift cars were running sequentially after the Time Attackers.

Curtis from Powerstation made some tweeks to my suspension during this break and said “Right Shaun, I expect to see at least 10secs off your time now” …. We both laughed at that point and I suddenly got nervous again!

So the second session started and we all went out again.

I felt a bit better this time and started to build (ever so slightly) the confidence levels and overall I knew I had done better this time. The biggest issue for me was (as expected) the high speed bends and the confidence in the tyres, chassis and brakes. Upon the end of the session I received the times through again and was very pleased that I had bought my lap times down to 1:14’s. It made me feel somewhat better to also know that out of us in the Club Challenge Subaru’s (Neil, Terry and Shaun Harvey) the times ranged from Neil and Shaun Harvey getting 1:12’s and myself and Terry getting 1:14’s.

Upon speaking to Iain Litchfield and Rich from PowerStation, they said that I needed to do something about my entry in to the big sweeping right hander at the end of the pit straight. I was braking way too early and was all over the place regarding my line (let’s be honest…. I was doing this on all the bends!!). I was then told I should be going flat out up to the bend marker down the pit straight, dabbing the brakes and then going flat in 4th crossing in to the bend….. I just laughed and said “No chance!!”.

One thing that did amaze me, was the amount of grip I had through the slower bends (which I REALLY liked going through, even if my line was all over the place). The Toyo 888’s I had on mixed with the PowerStation competition suspension setup was unreal. I have bucket seats and harnesses in my car and I still felt like I was coming out of the seat sideways….. it was unreal.

After a lunch break and a few more hours it was time for the last practice session.

Confidence was starting to build in what I could do….. but make no mistakes I was still very nervous and several places on the track I was driving like a granny, but with the improvements I had made from the 1st to 2nd session, I was hoping I could further improve in the last practice session in readiness for the final.

Again, as with the previous session I felt it went slightly better, but I was still unable to hold it flat through the right hander on to the pit straight and was also braking way to early in to the bend at the end of the pit straight and taking that sharp bend way too slowly… but I was getting up to 120mph down the pit straight (I have no idea what Neil, Terry or Shaun H was getting down the straight). At one point the 900+bhp Norris Evo was behind me coming through the first S bend, so I thought “lets see how much quicker 900bhp is” down the straight after this first S bend. I came through the final apex of the S bend, flat in 3rd and accelerated through the gears to the next S bend as quick as I could and the Norris Evo came FLYING past me down that specific straight like I was standing still….. it was unbelievable, what a car he has built!!!

After receiving the times I found that I had improved again and was now lapping at 1:13’s. Neil had also improved lapping in the 1:10’s and also Shaun H and Terry had improved lapping in the 1:11’s!

At this point I felt that there was so much left in my car and because I was driving really cautiously through the fastest parts of the circuit, I knew I just needed to be more committed and if I was I could catch up with my fellow drivers……. Unfortunately my confidence was the single most biggest issue!

After quite a long break, due to issues with some of the drifters going off we didn’t have the final until about 5:15pm. Thinking that my confidence levels wouldn’t allow me to drive anywhere near as fast as what the car was capable of and also the fact (and I am being totally honest here) had NO IDEA of what lines to take around the S bends and fast entry and exit bends on the 2 straights, I was under no illusions what would happen in the final…. But I was hoping to reduce my lap times to the 1:12’s even with all these short comings.

Even though we had been running in the practice sessions together (both Pro and Club Challenge Classes), the final was split in to two sessions. Club Challenge first, followed by the Pro Class last. The final was very different to the practice sessions, as there was only ever two cars (staggered) on track at once….. this meant that each driver should have a free circuit to race on to get the final time. This meant each car had a warm-up lap, one hot lap (timed) and a cool down lap.

When we all lined up, I had to admit my backside was going 10 to the dozen… perhaps more so than it did on my first session! So one by one off the cars went.

Because (again) of my lack of experience I obviously did not warm my tyres up properly in the warm-up lap as when I did my hot lap the car was all over the place. I knew I had done bad and was very disappointed, but then I still didn’t attack the fast sections as I wanted too so that didn’t help either. When I came back in the pits, the guys from Litchfield and PowerStation asked how I thought I got on….. the word started with “S” and ended with “T”. I spoke to Neil when I got back in the pits (Terry and himself had gone out before me) and I was told the following:

Neil : 1:10.4
Terry: 1:10.8
Me: 1:14.1
Shaun Harvey had spun out (but no damage to him or his car) and got a 1:25

Obviously I was disappointed that I had really fluffed up “when it counted”, but overall I was over the moon with the times I got. Taking in to account that Neil, Terry and Shaun H can certainly drive, together with my lack of confidence and experience (this guys are veterans compared to me lol) I think I did really well taking in to account my fastest lap of the day was only 3secs behind the fastest lapper out of us lot which was Neil. Couple that with the fact that Neil can undoubtedly drive having had the fastest lap at this years ScoobyNetLive / ScoobyShootOut Handling Circuit and coming 2nd in the final at the same event, I was chuffed to bits with my results…. And if anything this has given me more confidence in carrying on with this type of event. Well done to all you guys! Neil.... imagine what time you could of got if you had drove my car!!! Credit where credit is due though you all did well!

Having my own stress levels, I wasn’t really taking notice of the Pro class, but knew that the Powerstation/Litchfield car was doing really well.

When the final was ran in the Pro Class, the PowerStation/Litchfield car came fourth which was fantastic, especially considering they were well down on power to the others (and Silverstone is bias to high powered cars on the straights), but even more so considering there was ONLY 0.8 of a second between the top 4 in the Pro Class….. Well done boys!!!!

To end…..

This was a brilliant experience and ANYONE that wishes to give this kind of event a bash… DON’T BE SCARED NOT TO DO IT! Ok… you may be nervous, you may not know what a racing line is, you may not have the confidence to go as fast as your car can, this was all me but a)I did well and b)I really enjoyed it!!! Get on to www.timeattack.co.uk and book yourself in for future rounds!

Round 3 – July 1st Knockhill
Round 4 – August 20th Silverstone
Round 5 – September 5th Rockingham

It’s a pity there were not more spectators and really hope we see more people supporting us next time!!! There was plenty to see through the day, what with the Time Attackers, D1 Drifters throughout the day and demo cars/drivers through the lunch break.

Congrates to you cossie guys..... Steve Scott and Steve Fitzpatrick were absolutely storming throughout the day!!!

Well done Shaun, don't be too hard on yourself, as we all knew you were as slow as a 100 year old Sloth on national "go-slow" day, so didn't expect any different .

I picked my car up on Friday night (didn't get back until just before 2.00am ) only to discover that the suspension top mount on the nearside had collapsed (good job I didn't enter ).

Got some uprated Zoo ones to go in this time .

Saw Scotty yesterday, he was a bit gutted as he was 1-1.5sec quicker than ANYONE else in practice. His flying lap was also going very, very well and then he split a boost hose... GUTTING!

Saw the hose (turbo to intercooler), it had split around the jubilee clip, the only place on the hose there wasn't heat wrap! Typical!

Next time eh

Mike,

Look forward to a duel when you get sorted!

I have now taken solice in the fact that I wasnt as cack as I thought I always was (well not THAT cack)

Just found out all the sector times for the Final and I was in fact leading the Club Challenge Scoobs on the 1st sector (and that includes the first right hander after the pit straight lol)! But then obviously made a HUUUUUUGE bollock in the 2nd sector as I dropped back 3 seconds and we were all pretty even on the final sector.... oh well, onwards and upwards!

Steve,
Your car looks the bollocks mate..... but with only 400bhp, you must be a very good driver! Well done mate!

Tony,
Yep... this was timed runs on the National Circuit.

Hi Kev, full list of timings are here: http://www.msttiming.com/brdc/2006/62491.pdf

I have spoken with Gareth and as far as I know he has said he is definetly up for the Knockhill round. The previous two rounds has had prior commitments, but having won the first ever Time Attack event at GT Battle last year he is up to keep his crown . And as for Martin Handland, well Renton says he is going to compete, but when I don't know.

all time have to be taken in context,

the cars have to run road legal tyres,

four wheel drive cars wil allways have the edge with grip unless slicks are allowed,

p.s best time for my merc last time we where there was 101 sec on endurance slicks) and only 370 bhp

anything near that with road legal is moving some!
