how hard is it to take the fuel tank off a 1800 mk5 escort? anyone done this?
i bought a cosworth fuel pump and need to take the tank off to fit the internal pump, looked underneith the tank is near center of car and theres hardly any space to get under.
theres no engine in the car at the moment so cant even reverse it up the ramps
anyone shed some light? how u guys managed it?

I have done this on a ramp easy enough, I was talking to a mate last night who has taken one off on a pair of small ramps but it was not easy...

I just done one of these on a mondeo. They are quite easy to do so long as you are cautious (your dealing with petrol here!)
make sure you have plenty of rags handy to soak up any dribbles and dont forget to depressurise the tank first!!!!
Also you will need to buy a new rubber gasket (about 40p from fords) otherwise you might find the tank starts leaking.
To depressurise the tank start the car up and remove the fuel pump fuse then let the car die once its used up all the fuel (doesnt take long!) then remove the fuel filler cap.
if you cant run the car up then its a bit more difficult to depreussurise the system, if you have a haynes manual handy it will explain how to do it,.

ok just looked at the access to the pump from lifting the rear seat bench and carpet out the way, it cant be took out that way as theres not enough room to get the pump out.

no you cant do that mate.
i was pretty sure that you could get the pumps out from the top?
well to drop the tank you need to remove the filler cap, and then there are a couple of screws on the filler neck bit, then its 4 13mm bolts to undo from underneath.
not too much of a pain in the ass to do really

well you can see it once you have removed the carpet, but its kinda off center, plus theres only a small hole and no theres not enought room to get either your hand or even the pump out,
only other way i suppose is to try and take a piece of metal out to make the hole bigger however its steel so this wont be easy, plus the tanks diectly underneith so its quite dangerious.
i really need to get underneith and unbolt it, but as i said theres no room to crawl under, wouldent be so bad if i had a engine in as i could of just reversed it up the ramps,
however im awaiting my new engine as theres no engine in the car at the moment.
