You'll break your engine.

Use a magnetic pickup tool to find it?

if it goes into the sump, it will "probably" be ok.

if it gets to the pump though, its fucking game over

who's going to remove the sump? hope it's the garage

i collected a running engine (obviously it wasn't running when i picked it up, i would never have been able to catch the fooker ) but someone had taken the plugs and coil packs off of the top
not a problem i thought, went to spin it round and it couldn't go
eventually, after a few days, i thought "fook it" and took it to bits
one of the bolts from the coil packs was stuck in the piston

seing as i needed to take the head off anyway as i had to do the head gasket, this wasn't as bad as it could have been, but i've got to pull the sump off now (with counterbalance shafts etc) to get the piston changed

if your engine is running with some sort of foriegn object in it, it's not going to last long when that object decides it's going to egt moving in the oil system

I would of refused to take the car back until the garage had sorted it.

As said already, its the garage's problem. Not yours

Are you driving it around ?

get back down there, give them the spill that ya talked to trading standards if they kick up.

if you remove the sump, that sump gasket, oil, oil filter really you have to pay for then your time and haslle for there mistake.

sorry to say mate but your be a fool if you let them get away with this.

only good thing is they told ya about it but dont make it any better.

name and shame!

Easiest way to sort this is to get a VERY powerfull magnet on teh sump and catch it, dragging it to the oil drain hole. IF its in teh sump at all.

And yes, its 100% the tradesmans fault. He charged you to do a job, he has to finish it.

i wouldnt touch it well in saying that seeing as they done it in the first place i dunno if i would want to take iot back there but it is there fault and they have to sort it.

it wont get sucked into the oil pump so worse case it will sit in the sump, fact is its not ment to be there anyway.

what were they doing to drop it in there anyway?

call them, explain the situation, tell them you have been advised NOT to use the car due to this problem
explain to them that you need the car for your everyday life and the sooner they can remove the nut the sooner you can use the vehicle
also explain to them you need them to come and collect it and return it (note the mileage on the trip as well as the odometer down AND how much fuel you have in it before it goes away)

if you go there all hollerin and shouting you might get a different response than if you call them and tell them what has happened and suggest they rectify the problem

if they fob you off call the citezens advise and see what they asy, worst case is you go to court to recover the costs, but thats a LONG LONG way down the road

any decent garage will sort it out and bollock the guy who dropped the nut in there in the first palce and it all ends happily ever after

if ya dont trust/want them to do it and sort it out i would at lease ask for my money back and do it my self, that way it covers cost of bits ya gunna need, and ya only gotta hope the sump gasket dont leak after

That might explain a problem I had with a montego about 10years back. One oil pump failed and the dealer changed it. 6 weeks later the new pump failed. I stripped the pump to see why and there was an exhaust valve collet stuck between the gears. It had caused one of the gears to snap. It must have got through a hole in the pick up strainer at some point.
