Default Broadband download limits.....

BT tell me that I have a fair-usage limit of 40gb per month.

What does the 40gb include? Is it just downloads? I use Emule, which of course involves people uploading from you also. Does this count towards the limit?

In any case, I have just received an email from BT saying that I am over my limit (again) at 57gb. However, I use Netlimiter Pro (thanks Smit), which monitors internet usage and that says that for May, I downloaded 16.07gb and uploaded 22.64gb. Even if the 2 are added together, it still only comes to 38gb. So where's the other 20gb odd?

Not clear enough to give you a definitive answer.

40Gb of data transfer would include uploads and downloads, but most frequently they say "40Gb download limit" which is obviously, erm, obvious.

As for how you have used less than you think, I would suggest the software you are using is crap tbh. I would assume BT are limiting you to "40Gb transfer" so everything you do on the net will count towards this - whether it be browsing, playing online, downloading, uploading, msn etc etc. it all counts towards your 40gb

Just read the email again and it does include download and upload, but even still, I only make it 38gb.

But every time you look at a web page it downloads the pictures etc
That counts to your limit doesn't it?

I don't know, cos I have AOL and I don't have a limit

Netlimiter pro should record every single Kb you download/Upload what ever program your using! This includes torrents/email/webrowsing

Christian - I would suggest capping your upload when you are running torrents... With 22gig upload a month is a fuckin lot! I would suggest limiting upload to about 25kb when using Emule

Wierd though ...............

I have capped the Emule upload rate as the previous month saw more than 22gb uploaded.

Trouble is if you cap the upload rate, it also caps the download rate, no?

Is there any other way around it?

Also, as Smit said, Netlimiter monitors EVERYTHING. Even MSN.

can you not switch from BT to a isp that gives you unlimited broadband? then you need not worry about limits ever again

Incorrect Christian.

On Emule Uncap everything on there Upload/Download so it's is unlimited what you download and upload...

Now...

Limit your Netlimiter Emule Upload box to 10kb... This will still allow you MAXIMUM speed download...

like this......

Anything under 10kb it doesn't allow you, give it a go

Smit, have set it like that, will see how it goes.

All though, that still doesn't explain where the other 20gb that they are claiming I have used has gone. They are threatening to charge me Ł1.00 per gb that am over the 40gb limit (so, for example, Ł20 for last month).

Christian,

Once you've downloaded something, move it out of your shared folder

wanadoo sent me a letter staing that i had exceeded my download limit by 60gig for the last 3 months, thts 180 gig in 3 months!!!!!!!!! (a few months back this is)
they have said that anything over 40gig will result in possible termination of my service as it exceeds the fair play system (or some other crap)

if they have given me an 8mb line then it's a bit obvious i'm going to download more, the only reason i'm still with them is because of my email address

if i could swap over everything (included the email address) i'd be swapping over to someone like bulldog (16mb line, uncapped free phonecalls etc for less than i'm paing now) but i'm too scared

ok

this may or may not clear things up for you.
i work for tiscali broadband, and the FUP (fair usage policy) onlycomes into effect during peaktimes IE 6pm-11pm. and is for 30gb

its not worked out on your actual amount of downloaded data, but on an average of the downloads between these times.

hope that makes sense!!! BT may be diferent!!

its a really grey area and is VERY difficult to explain to customers on the fone!!!! they just cant get their heads round it!!!

Steve - The reason you are getting crap download speed is that you have limited your upload using Emule not Netlimiter...

I've uploaded it if anyone wants a copy... Have to install the patch before using it...
