Default Well thats the engine out....

Now its apart its pretty obvious whats not happy. Rear of the crank is bent Bearings have all been checked and only the no.4 one is burst and the 2 surrounding ones were starting to show signs due to the bend. Oil seal also is not too happy. Pretty odd as it sure as hell went in straight! lol

What caused it? No obvious signs - shells apart from no.4 show no oil issues. My block has a modified twin entry gallary and if anything no.4 enjoyed a very good supply....Maybe it didnt like the 3bar+ runs in the mid Thought folk said these cossie cranks were bullit proof lol

Plus side is everything else looks mint - block, bores, pistons,3 rods etc Oil pump cover still to come off - its probably unhappy as parts of no.4 shells are probably swimming round it!

Ho hum time to rebuild lol

Martin

..a cossie crank is renowned for handling over 800bhp in drag cars,i know of a couple of rallycross cars running over 700bhp.

I would guess thats a bigger turbo than them rallycross cars use...so from a pressure point you was overstretching it!...The rods i assume were shotpeened as in theory you are over 700bhp?...but of course not above 900bhp as your block is in tact (got that in before Rod pipes up )

using my mountain bike more

Not sure what to do - dont want to pay/wait for a bling crank. Good cossie cranks are hard to get and the costs to get to national day are too high so more thought needed....

My car wasnt anywhere near those HPs though. Conrods are aftermarket jobs. All we know is its the highest cylinder pressures WE had ever recorded by a long way per displacement measured on the same repeatable equiptment. Any other comparison is guess work.

Perfectly possible to destroy a crank with torque in the midrange without ever seeing big power from it.

700bhp rallcross cars tend not to make the sort of torque that you were possibly making?

500lbft in a rallycross car is a lot, but with 3 bar of boost you could easily have been running 600+ im guessing?

Slightest bit out on the tolerances can lead to some nasty shock loads too of course, as can any det

People who qoute "such and such a component can take X bhp" dont generally understand all the forces present.

Chip we talk real life experience not text book...try it one day.

...and as i said he would be above that torque of the rallycross engines mentioned by running 3bar at 5k with a bigger turbo...

Stress killed it IMO...hence my own engine runs without the GT35 now

that must of been some massive torque you were running mate!!!

did you ever snap driveshafts/propshafts?

To be honest i cant see how sucha massive turbo at such huge boost
CANT produce huge power/torque!

even IF you could wind a T34 up to 3 bar it would be doing something handy !
even if it only lasted 20 mins

I'm really proud of you Mr Dumped!

Hope you do the right thing and put it back together again

Neil.

PS Mountain Bikes suck - I'm covered in midge bites and have some kind of winged creature in my left eye after tonights antics

They can get expensive too - I've just broken a Ł650 set of Fox forks :

maybe it was my old crank you used?

the standard cossie stuff is good for alot of power marty but i think the way you engine produces its power might have a lot to do with the probs...

bet you graph has high power/torque low down compared to alot of other engines...
