Broken diff / cv's?
Well I passed my sva today and the drive down to chelmsford was fantastic but judging by the very loud rumbling noises coming from the transmission and the rather large ammounts of driveline shunt I've broken something (damn 1st gear is so much fun). I couldn't really hear anything during acceleration (but got the feeling it was still there) but there was a very pronounced rumble during the overrun from high revs that could be felt throught the car, it dissapeared when the clutch was depressed at speed.
Its a kit car with cossie engine (running in at the moment
)
I've checked all the bolts are tight, Its a XR4x4 7" LSD (3.62) diff, driveshafts, hubs etc. Gearbox has had a full rebuild by CTS less than 50 miles ago.
There is a lot of play between the propshaft and the wheels, although on closer inspection most of it is in the inner cv joints. How much play should these have? The diff input to output shafts play is a mm or 2 (around circumference of the input flange) the rest of the cm or so of play seems to be the cv's. There is a little play between the two wheels, but the lsd mechanism seems to be working ok
The shafts also move latteraly in the joints a fair bit, but i guess thats normal. The suspension was on full droop when I checked the play.
Any comments or ideas? Wheres the best place to get new cv's and how much are they going to cost?

sounds like you've got a lot of backlash in the cv's/diff
it's also possible that due to the age of the rear end there is a bit of play in the shafts as well
the only way to sort it is to bite the bullet and get some new cv's
they are about Ł50 each last time i looked but if you can afford to have the car off the road, pull the driveshafts out of the back end and see how much slop there is in the actual shaft to inner cv ring
if there is any present then you might be looking at new shafts as well as new cv's

I am building my rush with the same back end as yours and got four CV's for Ł84 all in from Part Co.
Wasnt expecting much after being quoted up to Ł58 each but the joints look like new (even laser etched with the spec) and came complete with Joint covers and boots.
They also came with new circlips but these got binned as they were thinner than fords - perhaps causing some of your side to side play ?
I also binned the bolts as I allready had 12.9's.
