MOT madness
Ive just had the S2 RS in for an MOT and its failed, Ive still to pick it up so I havnt realy spoke to the station yet but the long and short of it is. It failed because it has no ABS. The complete ABS system has been removed leaving just the driveshafts, the tester says that its all computerised now and it tells them on a list what to check for and ABS is listed for my car. Ive never heard of anyone esle having this problem. What about everyone that removes the rear compensators and fits a bias valve, it would fail for this aswell? Has anyone else came accross this problem? This is realy p*****g me off, I dont want to have to fit that crap back on the car. I dont have it anymore anyway, it was launched in the skip months ago.

Because it's all changed now. Lots of new regs brought in. Each MOT has to take 45 minutes or more as well. So prices have gone up as you have to log the car onto the computer and it has to stay logged on for 45 minutes so testers cant do anywhere near as many in a day.

Hmmm...mine was ok with the ABS removed, I still have the light in the dash which works when the handbrake is applied. This was before the new MOT system was running in my local garage though, so looks like next year will be fun

Doii the light has been removed, The only bits left from the ABS are the 2 driveshafts.
Rab I tried that one but the tester said all 89 RST's had ABS and showed me the test sheet with the listing. He also went on to say its highlighted so must be fitted then went on to agree with me that the ABS is a pile of crap. Did all 89 RST's come with ABS??

yeah the new system will tell if a car has abs as standard .
its a pain in the arse for us the testers aswell .
but if the abs has been removed completely I would pass it.
just tell the tester that its never had abs as that will put doubt in his mind
and he will have to pass and advise

I had this when testing a car for a customer last month. Bands were missing but the ligt still worked as per the description.
The manual states thet -
Missing components
Where a vehicle is presented for test with an ABS component obviously missing but, follows the correct sequence of operation, the defect must be brought to the attention of the presenter.
If your light goes on and off with the hand brake then ask him what the manual says about it.
if you have no light and no ABS I'm sure it should fail as it's std fitment and the light does not work.
it's important that your light works as it should regardless of wether you have abs still fitted.
Stupid VOSA rule, but it's the way out of your trouble.

would go somewhere else TBH. if it aint fitted how can it be faulty. Try ringing the dvla if not and see what the score is with it. I no one of the frs boys put his cat back on for mot time, and the computer didn't tell him to do the emmision test so he couldn't fail it even if it had the decat on

The point is it should be there as std on all erst's as the vts device has that info from Ford.
What it says is that the light should be there and work as Ford designed it.
The fact parts are missing is not a failure.
JUST IF THE LIGHT DOES NOT WORK AS FORD INTENDED
If the tester deliberatlty ignores a failure point he could loose his licence, so it's your problem not his.
Just fix the damn light and stop moaning

My S2 has the ABS binned off and no back seat and a roll cage. The MOT guy uses the new system and mine failed.
Fortunately it failed on a duff headlight and a back brake. Teh ABS and lack of seats was no problem at all

same here, mine went straight through with the ABS removed and no dash light...
I thought it was optional on ERSTs? (same as the fiestas)
strange that the light should be on for MOT purposes if the ABS isn't there, surely that can be seen as trying to blag it even more?

So where do you stand with a modded car then If you have removed the abs system coz its total shite that makes the car modded and therfore should not be subject to the same mot requirements??????????????
It seams to me that the new mot is open to real abuse by the testers themselfs as my local garage would pass the car so long as the brakes worked ie in balance you cant even test abs correctly at a garage any way all you can do is make sure the light goes on and off like its supposed to which as we all know means nothing at all.

It looks like Ive just been realy unlucky putting it into this garage and in my case the fail is apart from the light entirely down to the testers own interpretation of the rules. I did try to blag it and say it never had ABS and the garage owner started going on about risking his testing licence so Ł45 down the pan.

Basicaly your car has failed the brake test because the ABS light fails to light up on the dash. There no way the tester can tell if the ABS is working on the rolling road that they use for braking testing becuase all there are looking for is the braking force against the rollers, not if the ABS is pulsing.
My RST had the ABS removed properly and the ABS light working when ign on and handbrake on and it never failed an MOT for ABS not working
Adam, your S2 will be fine through a MOT, they will see its mint and well looked after

You can always appeal to the about it and complain that as the abs is no longer fitted to the car at all how can it be a failure the car is modded and therfore will not be at the std manufacture specs there must be a way of doing this

i removed the abs from the 3 door when i fitted the bias pedal box
the tester said he was going to fail it because the abs wouldn't work
i pointed out to him that there was no abs (bias box plus remote servo's caused lots of complications at that time ) because i had removed it and he was fine about it because i'd explained it to him
if he'd just carried on and i hadn't noticed him asking his mate he wold have failed me first and then possibly made me cough up for another test later on
this is going back well into history as it was 1993 when this happened
