So is a snapped shaft really bad? Or is it just the same proceedure as refurbing a unit anyway?

Dont expect too much mate, I recently sent one that came off a running car, was smoking so just assumed it needed a rebuild, sent it off and the report was that a foreign object had done terminal damage to the innards and it was dead
ended up buying a nearly new KKK hybrid that had done 1000 miles for £340, cost about 600-700 I think, loads cheaper than a new one and easier than finding one to get repaired

Just had my turbo back from them - and they done a TOP job - well happy and pleased.
Have used Vince before when he was at Universal.
