Default Laptop on planes - allowed?

So, I am going to America soon (yay me) and I use my phone as an MP3 player - but I doubt they will let me use it on the plane right?

So would they let me use a laptop on a plane? Guy at work thinks it would be fine, says the only time you can't use it is on take off and landing, and it needs to be packed away.....

Anyone know for sure?

Cos it'd be cool if I could, so I could use it to play MP3's and also, I could rip a couple of movies to it to watch if I get bored...

So, whats the chances of me actually getting away with discreetly being able to plug my headphones into my phone and play MP3's to myself as we fly along?

Slim to none?

What happens if I get caught?

Matt, All electronics I.E- mobile phones, laptops, mp3 players, etc have to be shut off while the plane is getting ready to leave. Once you're in the air you can turn on your laptop,mp3 player, etc,etc...
Same when you go to land, All electronics have to be turned off and once the plane lands you can turn on your mobile if need be.

Its nowt to do with what the laptop is emitting. Its just in case you need to get off quick (crash, fire etc) which obviously happens near the floor. They dont want 200 people fighting to get passed you and your laptop. Most modern aircraft now have avionic systems that wont be interfered with by mobiles.sadly they dont tell the trolly dollies.Ask when you get on board.

Yep fine, turn off for take off and landing. Only business class normally has power supply. Singapore airlines this time even had wireless broadband on their 747's for economy class users. Was even a passenger using his PDA.

No phones are allowed though, certainly on Sinagpore Airlines.

With regards to "what if I get caught", be sensitive to other passengers needs who may be nervous etc and dont risk it.
