there is a switch on the thermostat housing a small 2 pin doesn't look like a fan switch but when bridged it does nothing think it may be a temp sender.

Right, this can get complex. The Escort diesels had fan switches in about 3 different locations depending on it's spec (air con greatly complicates things). It's either in the thermostat housing, top radiator hose or the bottom passenger side corner of the rad.

Some are blue 2 pin switches, others are red with 4 terminals for 2 stage fans like the Escort Cossie.

I think the one in the T/stat housing is the temp sensor for the aircon. By disconnecting it, you might have triggered the aircon cooling fan. I think the fan switch is actually in the top hose if it's got air con.

It's a long time ago since I last worked on an Escort diesel with air con so iam jsut trying to remember bits about them.

yeah, thats where it is on non air con models for sure, the relay is behind the battery, i'm pretty sure one of the fuses in the little block on the frfont of the battery is also for the fan and/or a 30amp in the main fusebox.

Yes, it's a green relay for the fans. There is probably a fuse in the battery fuse box but I can't remember.
