Default Guys, i need computer help (supergeeks only please)

ok, i'm stuck

it looks like the GFX card in my main PC has died was using it happily then screen corruption appeared, reboots and cooldowns didnt cure it cleaned out PC (fans were FULL of dust!) and tried again, no joy, now i'm getting "no vaild screen mode" on the monitor PC still boots and works, i just cant see the screen

anyway, i'm desperate to get some AVIs off the HDD to watch NOW so i get out my laptop and try n grab them over the network...

...and this is where the problem starts

i have the administrator password on both PCs set the same
i have an account called "jim galbally" on both PCs (blank password) with admin rights
the guest account is enabled on both PCs (i THINK it MIGHT have a password on the desktop pc tho!)
both PCs are in the same workgroup (CALLED WORKGROUP)

when connecting from the laptop to the desktop (called marlbro) i get prompted with user: MARLBRO\Guest (greyed out) and prompted for a password

now, i know i used to get this even with a blank guest password i figured if i logged on with an account thats the same on both PCs with the same password etc. then it'd just work, but it frigin don't

so, anyone got any ideas how i can get the files off of my PC?

RDP is DISABLED on the desktop (because there are accounts with blank passwords) i can't enable it because i cant see the screen to click on the buttons i might be able to get a command window open and do somethng in there, but i have no idea if theyd be successful or not

i can't dameware onto the PC because i can't remote install the dameware service because i don't have access to the admin$ share

i can't just take the HDD out, because i cant plug a SATA or IDE drive into a laptop :P

infact, ive run out of ideas

Done this before Jim, find the net syntax command list, and do it 'blind'... takes a few goes, but usually you can get it.

Surely your mobo has built in graphics so you can just plug your monitor into that? If it doesnt then silly you for not buying one that does!

steve,

i think its not actually booting properly now, so cant get into CMD

when it was booted, i did try a few user ones, like resetting administrator password, enabling guest (even tho i know it already was) and resetting guest password.

dunno if theres a command to do anything else USEFUL

ive left it off now, give it half hour to cool down n see if it makes any difference (its not overheated tho, its cold to the touch)

and no i dont have a built in GFX card, it's a top of the range motherboard, they dont come with shitty built in graphics cards

ps the card is a nvidia 6800 Ultra, really dont fancy having to replace that ŁŁŁ

Jim,

Take the side of case off, and put a fan next to it blowing cold air onto it.

Assuming the card isn't fucked. Which I suspect it is.

Now, turn speakers up Switch on pc, wait until hard drive light stops flashing and you'll be at the logon screen. I think if you press enter it act's as a mouse click, thus type in password and press enter. The sound of your windows loading music should confirm you've done this.

On laptop, click start, then run and do \\ <name of pc here> then it will open up all your shared files / folders.

If, however, you've made your pc that secure, and supergeeked it, then it's time to borrow a graphics card, or take hard drive out and put in another pc.

Sitting behind me is an old shitbox of a time pc in the event of this happening

dan, been there, done that it wont connect from the laptop to the PC because all the little security tricks dont work on the laptop because its a member of a domain witha really strict group policy.

even after i un-gimped the loaptop it STILL wouldnt connect

ive just driven into work (1hr drive ) and picked up 2 old matrox graphics cards that should do the trick also submitted an RMA to ebuyer on the gfx card, so we'll see how that pans out...

also im copying the stuff i wanted to watch over from the HDD onto a pen drive (thank GOD for 2gb pendrives )

so i should have the last episodes of 24 watched by the end of the afternoon just gotta drive an hour home 1st its only 8 miles london sucks

analog out goes to 1600x1200 but just looks a bit naff, not 100% clear

oh well, itll do till i get a replacement card
