which one have you bought? 8v?.

well, i've recently found out they arent as slow as i previously thought

they are great cars. my dad has had 4, very chuckable cars. basically if the shell is not rusty and the panels all line up its a good bet its a minter. mechanically they are fine and reliable in my experience.

what are u replacing?

my xr3i which was wrote off about 2months ago

its an 8v one owner, shes now late 60's so dont think its been hammard, everything lines up,never been crashed, underneath is solid,so they are quick then??

are they very tuneable?

well, i had a a debadged golf mk2 behind my in my standard rst and it was every so slightly falling back from me, but only slightly. a 16v wouldnt have done but i thought a 8v would have been shown the door, but it stayed with me. so they seem quicker than their 112bhp, or rsts slower than 132bhp worth lol

they are tunable to about 140bhp with head work & cams etc. but take one on a b road when its standard. i think you'll find it more impressive than your old xr.

underneath should be solid, terminal rust generally isnt a problem with old golfs. do u like the on board computer? i love them

one thing with old vws is that they didnt have the showroom appeal like the equivilent ford (rst) or pug (205). the golfs are very basic. but, in reality they are a better car then both. i think some of the late 16v models had electric windows, so you may be able to get them fitted.

someone near me has a mk2 with the 20v turbo engine in, its running 288bhp. looks/sounds nice.

i think they handle well, very fun feel to them
