best thing you can check is the small 2" hose that comes off fuel rail to the fuel regulator. thats almost certainly what caused my fire. looks like the jubilee was slack and fuel dripped down on to the dizzy.
replace the hose and get 2 spanking new jubilees on

Gutted 4 your mate.... i went through exactly the same last year. 9years and ?k up in flames in minutes
the insurance assessor just walked up to it and said "yep, common fault with these" and walked off! I just hope to god that your mates got agreed value, because i got shafted by HIC/HIGHWAY
Have now bought a 3dr which will now have a plumbed in system and a big handheld in it cause i'm now so paranoid.
I've been told to point the spray nozzles under the bonnet upwards so that it hits the under bonnet and comes down as a blanket of foam... anyone know if this is right...

I have not had a fire (touch wood) but had an extinguisher fited in between the front seats on my old s2, it was just behind the handbrake. The mot centre actually commented on that fact it looked factory fitted.

That flint shell i sold a week or two ago would have probably done!

I can't really understand why people don't have a fire extinguisher in their car.
It is even obliged by law over here in Belgium to have a working one in the car !!!

Absolutely gutted for him!!
At the same time very interesting to read this thread, last summer I started my car up on the drive and moved it into the garage, when I stopped it I could see flames reflected on the floor! I lifted the bonnet and sure enough there was flames which I managed to smother.
When I checked things sure enough as said in a few other posts the small fuel pipe between the rail and the pressure regulator had leaked onto the dizzy and caused the fire, the fault seemed to be the Ford hose clips.
Now I have a new section of high pressure pipe, 2 new jubilee clips and a bloody big fire extinguisher behind the drivers seat!
Think the main thing from this thread is 2WD OWNERS CHECK YOUR FUEL RAIL TO PRESSURE REGULATOR PIPE.
Steve

plugs, oil, filters, PIPE + CLIPS etc
do the tuning companies on here routinely check/replace these as part of any servicing?

You can't get halon anymore.
Water would be useless on any fire involving fuel, foam is the only thing that will stop it and if you don't have enough foam to cover all the fuel then it can burn through the layer that it forms.
Also, cars contain fluroelastimers which when involved in a fire can produce acid in the smoke. I'm sure you all know they that can be very harmfull! So please everyone, don't get in the smoke trying to fight the fire, wait for the fire brigade if the fire is beyond the extinguishers you carry.
Oh and another thing, if any of your engines have magnesium heads on them don't put water on the fire in the engine, water and magnesium fires don't mix!
Hopes that helps some of you.
Matt

I went out in the 3dr last year to buy a fire extinguisher in case i had an accident,On the way home i ended up parking backwards in a hedge
Alan Rainbow's car caught fire on track last year at Croft and lucky for him he had an extinguisher so that no doubt saved his car!

Gutted for your mate, such a waste of a nice car
Have always carried a fire extinguisher in the car as the old man did and said, its better to be safe than sorry. Thankfully never needed it but is worth carrying.

just pop the bonnet and spray it in best you can OR, get a second person to lift it slowly while you spray it in...

Looking at the damage in the pictures it would seem that having no turbo heat shield has to be one of the most likely causes of this fire! Either that or some wiring around the fusebox (for the radiator fans maybe?)
It definitely doesn't look like the fuel hose split near the reg!
Runing without a heatshield on the turbo is asking for trouble!
