assuming that at some point it goes to court:
a) can you get the ammount you are out of pocket added to the courts costs somehow?
or
b) can you sue through the small claims court for the amount you are out of pocket.
neither are ideal, or might not even be possible, idk. just food for thought.

only if they have been registered on the network by making a call. i sold a upgrade on ebay once and didnt do this, the paypal got recalled and i lost Ł450 and couldnt even cancel the phone as i hadnt made a call on it to register it
I would just give the plod his details, and everything. If he was not aware it was stolen (maybe it was a gift) then he has nowt to worry about. You need to cover your own back before you worry about him or the money, and as said chances are if it goes to court you'll easily get your money back especially since you payed with paypal. I wouldn't name and shame in this case, just tell Petrucci. Then futher sales can be kept an eye on.
If you dont get your money back for the stolen item then you can go through the small claims court. As you have all the reciepts you got a water tight case for the money back, plus whoever it is your claiming off will have to pay YOUR court costs which alone will prob amount to more than the price of the refund.
