Well its worth pointing out that they arent really a "W" shape. In the sense of 2 V6's with 4 heads glued together. On a W12 its still only 2 banks, just that the bores are offset. Anyone whose seen a Golf VR6 will know its a very narrow angle with only 1 head. Think of a W12 as 2 VR6 engines glued into a V and you'll see what I mean

Interesting, always wondered that too.
One other question staying with VW engines, what configuration is a V5 engine in? Always wondered but never had chance to look and this thread has reminded me.
