Default W12 V V12

What the advantages over the new style W engine to the tradition V style engines? Is it just size?

far more compact motor and cheaper to manufacture as most W12s are modular.

Well its worth pointing out that they arent really a "W" shape. In the sense of 2 V6's with 4 heads glued together. On a W12 its still only 2 banks, just that the bores are offset. Anyone whose seen a Golf VR6 will know its a very narrow angle with only 1 head. Think of a W12 as 2 VR6 engines glued into a V and you'll see what I mean

The orginal design of a W12 engine had 3 banks of 4. The centre one being vertil.

Interesting, always wondered that too.

One other question staying with VW engines, what configuration is a V5 engine in? Always wondered but never had chance to look and this thread has reminded me.

Very similar to the VR6 engine. 5 offset bores (3 at the front 2 at the rear). All inside 1 block and 1 head. The advantage is that the engine is more or less the same length as a 4 pot. (Ignore the PR speil about "Performance of a 6, Economy of a 4" )
