Default Slowpokes new brakes - amazing :D

Today, after weeks of me designing brackets and creasing ISO drawings for them, and Matt machining them, we fitted his new brakes

Here are a few pictures of them.

The old ones - a Hi-spec 300mm conversion

The new bracket fitted - made out of A2 Stainless Billet

The new caliper fitted - my god its HUGE

And finally, a few with the wheels fitted

Big thanks to matt for allowing me to prototype this big brake kit on his car (at his expence) - I'm sure that once the pads are bedded in, the car will be doing rollovers and endo's on the motorway

PS People - the pictures don't give a true size of the calipers - they are approx 14" tall, and the pistons are 2" diameter each, and each caliper has 4 pistons

some serious stopping power

How do the pads line up i relation to the disc? Looks like you could of good a wee touch bigger in disk size? Maybe i'm wrong, just looking at the gap between the outer edge of the disc and the caliper.
There look top notch

i know what it weighs, i have a pair in my garage that i use as weights , they are that fookin heavy, we decided against using steel for that very reason, i may just weigh them again later

Surely unsprung weight is more important on a car used on bumpy surfaces? (i.e. a road car)

Not having a dig, just playing devil's advocate

They look ace by the way!

Basically to get the larger, heavier disc spinning takes more work then spinning a smaller lighter disc, thus you wont go as fast.

VERY basically and not very acuratly, but is the general idea

sprung weight is you sitting in the car.... you are supported by springs and their movement is controlled by the dampers.

things like wheels and brakes that are the wrong wide of the spring for it to have any effect are called "unsprung" weight

if we are not 'bothered' about 'unsprung weight' what is the nessesity for 'bigger brakes' ??

obviously , we are interested in going fast , otherwise we wouldnt need to have bigger brakes.

unsprung weight is very vital in the way a car turns/handles.

more later .................................................. ........................ if there is interest.

just wegh them brackets, i would like to bet they weigh near half the amount of the discs again ??????????????? EACH !

Markk - get a 'proper' explanation up!

My understanding is:

Unsprung weight is anything that moves with the road surface (so wheels, tyres, brakes, lower arms etc).

Sprung weight is anything that is isolated from the road by the suspension (Shell, engine, box, you).

Unsprung weight should be as low as possible as it affects the way the suspension behaves, and hence the handling of the car.

Neil.

because it is nothing about getting a disc spinning or stopping a disc spinning (thats inertia)

unsprung weight is the weight of the moving assembly the more weight you have in the wheels etc the slower it will be to react to change in direction and upsets the handling.

think of trying to disco dance with a house brick in each hand, with the 'unsprung weight' of the bricks at the end of the arm you aint going to be pulling the moves of john travolta so easily

My thoughts exactly, forgetting all the technical jargon for a minute, someone has taken the trouble to go and help someone else, in a field neither specialise in, and sucessfully completed the project.

Those calipers look far too big for the disc that's being used... are the pads overhanging the outside of the disc?? fair play for having a go though.

A couple of mm overhand Martin - but this would be remedied by Matt using 330mm rotors instead of 325

However, that would require new bells, and different brackets, and we will be back to stage 1 of scratching our heads

as you can see, no pad overhang

Cracking job lads

If hi-spec can offer a disc of this spec i would be very interested
