with say a 400bhp zetec engine... is it worth going for an exhaust (eg 3"bore) when my t34 turbo outlet diameter is 2 1/2"?

Mostly for best "breathing" the downpipe size outlet should be the same size as the exhaust outlet of the turbo

i've seen a pulser get 418 bhp with a 2.5" mongoose system on a set of rollers, and thats with the tight std elbow.
but after he did fit a 3" elbow and down pipe.

i think best for you, = 3" down pipe, going into 2.5 system after 36"+ from turbo,
cos as exhaust cools, it compresses = not so large pipe is needed.

but also matters on design of down pipe, if got tight bends in, then the bigger the better, but if good straight set up, smaller will do.

Even the XR3i Exhaust was 2.24" Phil. I think the RST and Cossie standard exhausts were 2.5"...
