Default Rolling road tune, blown turbo, who's fault? Help please!

Evening gents,

I acquired Doo's old S2 RST in a px deal a few weeks ago and took it to have it set up on a rolling road this morning as the engine was only rebuilt 1500 miles ago.

I collected it this afternoon and the graphs etc all looked fine (227.4 bhp & 246 lbs/ft) but about half a mile from the garage it was making an odd noise. I drove another half mile home with it running rough then stopped and restarted it in my drive. Cue massive clouds of white smoke, smoke from the bottom of the turbo and no boost

I assume the turbo is knackered in some way (sorry don't know anything about turbos!), but my question is that is this the fault of the garage who did the RR setup or is it just an unlucky coincidence?

Do I have any rights which means that they should fix it?

Any help much appreciated

Cheers,
Bryn.

You have no recourse against the garage at all mate. Car parts let go mate it's part and parcel of owning a modded car

I doubt it's possible for them to have broke your turbo, it will have been exposed to some abuse on the rolling road but will have been on it's was out for ages now. Was the turbo replaced when the engine was built. Car running rough could be caused by oil getting into engine though inlet due to worn seals.

Thanks guys, I was just saying to my girlfriend that the RR was probably the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.

I just wanted to check that it couldn't have been anything that they adjusted which caused it to go bang but they seem like a sound bunch who know what they're doing.

Its a Garrett T3 as far as I know on a 2.1 ZVH, I assume I can just replace it with something like this?
ebay T3

Cheers,
Bryn.

Yes you can just replace it but first of all I'd try to find out when it was last changed, if it wasn't long ago then maybe there's an underlying problem. What boost is that for a T3 to hit that power, I'm guessing over 16 psi?

Absolutely. Used turbo's can be troublesome if they've been abused and not cooled down properly after use.

If you're running high bosst may be worth getting an uprated unit rather than standard replacement

Thanks again guys, I believe the turbo in it was an 'uprated' T3, is it worth having it rebuilt and what is it likely to cost? Any idea what might have been uprated in it (sorry for my ignorance on turbos).
I think it was running 18psi by the way.

Cheers again,
Bryn.

PM

Danny@RADesigns for an estimate mate

Bear in mind though that he cant be expected to it though if when he recieves it he finds a housing badly scored or something.

I agree with the above BTW, not the RR to blame, was an old turbo used harder than ever it was intended to be and it couldnt hack it.

Should I be getting a different bigger turbo other than a T3?

Cheers,
Bryn.
