Buy one!
I don't think you'd regret buying one mate. Had mine since august 1995 (is that a record? ) and still love it.
I reckon if I added up how much I've spent on it, it would be less than people I know spend on mundane run arounds, replacing them every 2-3 yrs.
Only big expense was an engine rebuild (to stage 3) about 6 yrs ago. And that was largely due to me tinkering with the boost - "another half turn will be ok". You live and learn.
Get one that's been looked after, and have it worked on by someone you trust and it'll be no bother.

They are performance cars with high mileage and 12+ years of hard usage on the road.
You should therefore expect that parts will need replacing, some welding may have to be done, etc... as you would any other "classic" car.
You don't go and buy a 20 year old porker and expect it to be cheap, hassle free motoring do you ?
With a bit of luck, someone will have done most of the important work by now, but this is by no means a certainty. Those that are mint, are obviously more expensive.
As long as you are prepared to put a little effort into keeping it on the road (not just top it up with oil from time to time), they are a great car to have, I've had my 4x4 almost 8 years now and loved every minute of it

Shame mines not anywhere near sorted yet and you could have a go in mine.
Get a nice 4x4 stage 3, which is what mine is.
The mk6 rs2k i'm driving at the mo has better build quality than the saff but who cares about that as soon as the turbo comes on boost!
Where abouts in barra u from, cos i'm from Millom
